After entering the game when Kevin Youkilis was ejected for charging the mound, Mike Lowell hit two home runs on Tuesday night to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Detroit Tigers, 7-5. Lowell hit a solo homer in the third to break a 3-3 tie, then added a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 6-3. If this keeps up - and the Angels certainly hope it will - they might have to explain to their fans why they yanked their most effective pitcher out of their starting rotation. Garrett Richards dominated the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, pitching seven innings without giving up a run or a walk. The Angels scored nine runs in the first inning - highlighted by Mike Trout's first grand slam - and rolled to a 10-0 rout at Angel Stadium. The Angels scored more runs in the first inning Saturday than they had totaled in any of their first 15 games this season.

Kansas City's bullpen pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings and the Royals ended the Detroit Tigers' six-game winning streak with a 7-5 victory Tuesday night. The AL Central-leading Tigers led, 5-2, but starter Rick Porcello and their bullpen couldn't hold it. In another blow to the Detroit bullpen, closer Fernando Rodney was suspended three games for throwing a ball toward the stands Friday after a win over Tampa Bay. The team said it would appeal, delaying the start of the suspension.

BOSTON — Jerry Dipoto dismissed growing speculation that Mike Scioscia's job is in jeopardy, the Angels' general manager refusing to lay blame for what has been a disappointing season so far at the feet of baseball's longest-tenured manager. "We're 3 1/2 games out in the wild-card race, but you'd think we were in last place," Dipoto said before Thursday night's game. "Quite frankly, it's a distraction. Mike has been the manager of this team for a long time. He has a very long track record that suggests he's qualified.

Josh Beckett pitched seven strong innings for his major league-high 14th win, Mike Lowell and Jason Bay hit home runs and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 8-2, Wednesday night. Bay and Lowell provided Beckett all the runs he needed, giving Boston a 3-0 lead after three innings. Bay hit a two-run shot in the third after Lowell's solo home run in the second. "When Jason gets hot, as you can see, it's not just singles," Manager Terry Francona said. There wasn't any carry-over from Tuesday night's bench-clearing brawl that began when Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis was hit by a pitch from Rick Porcello and charged the mound.

Boston's Kevin Youkilis and Detroit pitcher Rick Porcello were suspended for five games each Wednesday and fined by Major League Baseball, a day after their brawl at Fenway Park. Youkilis will begin his suspension during Wednesday night's game against Detroit. Porcello appealed, and no penalty will take effect until the process is complete. MLB Vice President Bob Watson cited Youkilis for charging the mound, throwing his helmet at Porcello and inciting Tuesday night's bench-clearing tussle.

Given the depth and star power of the Yankees' lineup, you could probably argue for days over who was most responsible for getting New York to the postseason. But there's no debating who kept them there, with pitcher A.J. Burnett going 52/3 strong innings and center fielder Curtis Granderson saving at least four runs with a pair of great catches as the Yankees staved off elimination Tuesday with a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 of the American League division series at Comerica Park in Detroit.

DETROIT — The ball was in safe hands. As the Minnesota Twins finished off their 9-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, Landon Thome held one of the most precious baseballs his father ever hit. Jim Thome had done it, swatting the 600th home run of his career in the seventh inning. The ball landed in the Tigers bullpen behind the left-field fence, and later Landon gripped the piece of baseball history with his little hands. "It's an unbelievable night, obviously," Thome said.

Reporting From Detroit — This is a resilient bunch, Jim Leyland said after injuries robbed his team of outfielders Delmon Young and Magglio Ordonez, and the Detroit manager wasn't just talking about his banged-up Tigers, who nearly lost designated hitter Victor Martinez on Tuesday night. Texas center fielder Josh Hamilton's bat flew into the seats behind the first base dugout in Comerica Park in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, hitting a fan in a Tigers jersey in the back of the head in the sixth inning.

Will the real Angels please stand up? Are they the ones who won a baseball-best 27 of 40 games since June 13? Or are they the Angels who are five games under .500 the rest of the season? Are they the Angels who scored 12 runs in their series opener in Detroit — the most they've scored in a game since mid-April? Or are they the Angels who were lucky to score twice in Friday's 12-2 loss to Detroit — the seventh time they've scored fewer than three runs in 15 games since the All-Star break?

Detroit Tigers starter Rick Porcello was on the ropes. The first three Dodgers to face him in the fourth inning reached base, with Marcus Thames driving in Matt Kemp to cut the Dodgers' deficit to 5-3. Considering the circumstances, were you surprised to see Dioner Navarro put down a sacrifice bunt there with two on and no outs? If you were, you weren't alone. "When he bunted, it surprised me," Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said. Navarro said he thought he had seen a bunt sign.
