Doesn't John Hughes claim to knock out a feature film script in a week or two? John Sayles, in some cases, a weekend ? Then 100 members of the nonprofit Independent Writers of Southern California, working as a team, should have no trouble cranking out their romantic comedy during the group's 72-hour Great American Movie Script-athon, set for July 27-29. "First and foremost, it's to showcase our talent," says Rick Smith, IWOSC secretary.

The parolee accused of murdering Polly Klaas has told police the 12-year-old girl was alive and hidden in the woods nearby while sheriff's deputies helped free his car from a ditch shortly after the kidnaping. In a detailed confession, twice-convicted kidnaper Richard Allen Davis said he returned to the scene and picked up Polly, then took her 31 miles to Cloverdale and strangled her, a law enforcement official said Monday. It is unclear how soon he returned or how long Polly remained alive.

Veteran publicist Rick Smith has replaced John Oswald as the Rams' director of public relations. Smith, 52, was the head of public relations for the San Diego Chargers for 13 years, leaving after the 1989 season. Oswald joined the Rams in 1983 as an assistant in the public relations department and became its director in 1987.

Gabe Corona completed 7 of 8 pass attempts for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns and Steven Ray carried 16 times for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Army-Navy Academy to a 33-20 nonleague football victory over the California School of the Deaf Thursday at Army-Navy. Army-Navy (2-0) led, 21-20, after three quarters but scored 12 straight points on a 1-yard run by Corona and a 40-yard scoring pass from Corona to Rick Smith. Smith, who also scored on a 20-yard pass from Corona, had 3 interceptions.

The Rams announced Thursday that Sunday's 1 p.m. game against the San Francisco 49ers at Anaheim Stadium is a sellout and will be televised on Channel 2. Team spokesman Rick Smith said that 67,821 tickets had been sold by Thursday's 1 p.m. deadline, enough to lift the television blackout, although a few obstructed-view seats remain on sale. The Rams' last televised home game was Dec. 1, 1991, against the Washington Redskins.

Fire swept through a home in Binghamton, killing a woman and three of her children and damaging four other buildings, including a neighboring church. The father managed to alert his oldest daughter in time for her to escape and then jumped to safety from a second-floor window, Fire Chief Clifford Colgan said. Emergency crews found Michael Ray, 56, and his daughter Courtney, 17, on the front lawn. "He kept saying: 'My wife! My kids! My wife! My kids!' " said neighbor Rick Smith.
