"The Ricki Lake Show" is a casualty of the daytime talker surplus. Twentieth Television, the show's distributor, will not renew the syndicated gabfest for the 2013-14 season; episodes will continue airing through September. “We would like to thank Ricki Lake as well as Executive Producer Gail Steinberg and the entire staff for their work this season," Stephen Brown, executive vice president of programming and development for Twentieth Television, said in a statement. "While we are proud of the topics the program tackled, including childhood obesity, life after the military, divorce, and addiction, we were simply not able to break through the crowded talk show marketplace.” The show launched in September and marked Lake's return to daytime after a nine-year absence.

Ricki Lake jumps off the couch and struts across the expansive set of her new talk show in a pair of killer black YSL Trib Toos. "Divine taught me to walk in high heels," she says. "He said, 'Honey, I'm gonna show you how to walk in those things.' He wasn't very nice to me in the beginning, but that was the one thing he taught me. " That was when she burst onto the public scene at 18, chubby, a bit frumpy and perfect for the role of Tracy Turnblad in John Waters' 1988 "Hairspray," the original - and edgier - vehicle that later spawned the glossy stage and movie musicals.

So WB entertainment president Garth Ancier feels that traditional family shows have suffered due to Nickelodeon ("Family? Valueless." by Brian Lowry, June 14). The blame actually falls on obtuse, visionless executives like Ancier. The WB network airs the moronic, uninspired "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as well as the feckless, near-aphrodisiacal "Dawson's Creek." How could Ancier have the gall to claim that the lack of shows for the entire family is "discouraging"? The fact that Ancier's name is also on one of the all-time lousiest series for young people, "The Ricki Lake Show," means he's responsible for serving more junk to kids than all the fast-food franchises combined.
