STAGE Intimate Illusion: Sleight-of-hand artist Ricky Jay is bringing his off-Broadway hit show directed by David Mamet to the Tiffany Theatre in West Hollywood for five weeks starting May 3. "Ricky Jay & His 52 Assistants," a one-man show of card tricks, storytelling and illusion being presented by Jay's friend, movie producer Joel Silver, will be at the 99-seat Tiffany to keep the show up-close and intimate, Silver said. Ticket prices are steeper than usual for the venue: $50 for all seats.
November 11, 2001 | THOMAS LYNCH, Thomas Lynch is a poet and essayist. His most recent books are "The Undertaking," "Still Life in Milford" and "Bodies in Motion and at Rest."
There are books that come along at just the right time. In a world that has become so sad, too savage, more somber than a species ought to inhabit without relief, the appearance of "Jay's Journal of Anomalies" offers the wary and heartbroken and deeply vexed rest, if only momentarily, from the terrible news of the day. These are divertimenti, crafted by a master and perfectly pitched in luxuriant bombast. "Superlatives arrest our attention.

One of the most amazing illusions in "Forrest Gump," a movie chock-full of special effects that opened Wednesday, has nothing to do with old newsreel footage--but with Gary Sinise playing a Vietnam veteran with both legs amputated. Sinise, 39, who has both legs, surprised even himself with his performance as Lt. Dan, a cocky Army officer who is wounded in the Vietnam War, losing both legs.

The Geffen Playhouse announced last week a return engagement of "Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants," July 9 through Aug. 26. But magically appearing with the sleight-of-hand master will be a $250 ticket -- a record-setting price for a sub-99-seat L.A. theater. The special VIP seats -- there will be 10 per show -- are the result of audience demand during the theater's sellout run of the Ricky Jay show in 2006, said Geffen spokeswoman Allison Rawlings.

"I just added a piece which I got today," says sleight-of-hand artist Ricky Jay, walking across a gallery at the Hammer Museum. Around us hang some 160 vintage broadsides, playbills and posters he's collected, all advertising magicians, sideshow performers and novelty acts -- say, pigs that do math. Jay, who's also an author an actor, points to a medium-sized poster propped against the wall.

Actor and magician Ricky Jay, featured in "Boogie Nights," opening Friday. The Unknown: I like to do research at the Huntington and Clark memorial libraries. They are two of the most wonderful rare-book libraries anywhere. I research things for this journal I publish called Jay's Journal of Anomalies and for books I may be working on. And if you're at the Huntington, you have the bonus of being able to walk through the cactus garden as well.
