"Ricky realized that he couldn't just shine the world on. He wasn't honest with other people, or with himself. He didn't face responsibility. He went through that phase where he thought 'Oh, it can't happen to me.' It did, and he paid society's price." --Bill Brown, Century football coach * Ricky Odoardi tells his story over and over again to a captive audience of one. His son. He tells it the same way he did the other night at Century High's football office.

Century defeated Temple City, 20-6, for its first football playoff victory in a Southern Section Division VIII game Friday night in Santa Ana Stadium. Senior quarterback Ricky Odoardi rushed for 77 yards and Julio Garcia added 59 yards to pace Century's ground game. But it was some unconventional plays that helped the Centurions (6-4-1) eliminate unseeded Temple City (5-6). Century held off a late rally to notch its first victory of the season, beating Troy, 21-14, in a nonleague game Thursday night at Fullerton High School. The Centurions (1-3-1) had a 14-0, fourth-quarter lead when Troy quarterback Brian Logan started connecting with his receivers to bring the Warriors (2-3) back into the game. It took a 91-yard, fourth-quarter kickoff return by the Centurions' Abel Perez after the first Troy touchdown to provide the winning margin.

Century's football team found a way to come back from an 0-3-1 start this season. But the Centurions couldn't find a way to stop San Marino's passing offense in the Southern Section Division VIII semifinals Friday night. It all would have worked out fine, except Century High's football team had to come along and mess up the Southern Section Division VIII pairings. Century, a team that was 0-3-1 and headed nowhere six weeks ago, enters its first-round game with Temple City with a 5-4-1 record and seeded third in the division.
