After Serra High guard Ricky Price took a hard fall in the third quarter, his teammates made a run at Long Beach Poly, but the Cavaliers lost, 64-57, in a nonleague game Thursday night at Serra. Price, who has signed a letter of intent to attend Duke, was driving toward the left side of the basket when Poly's Damion Dawson undercut him. Price flipped over Dawson, fell to the court and injured his lower back. "I knew he was hurt," Serra Coach Dwan Hurt said. "I didn't think it was intentional."

Grumpy Old Dads, on the telephone, first thing Thursday morning. "Nice game by Toby last night against USC, real good shooting," Rick Price says to John Bailey. "Why, thanks," John Bailey says. "That means he's all shot out. Through for the month. Your boy will be easy pickings for my boy on Sunday." "There you go again, running your mouth." "UCLA doesn't have a chance against Duke, and you know it." "Hey, Coach Rick?" "Yeah, Coach John?" "At least my boy is starting." Click. Click.

Ricky Price is a pretty smart guy--after all, the 6-foot-6 forward from Serra High is headed to Duke this fall. So he knew what he was saying when, playing for the White all-star team, he walked over to the Blue all-stars' bench in the third quarter and asked, "You gonna break this team up?" The Blue all-stars answered with laughter and a 125-115 victory over the Whites in the Southern California Summer Showcase basketball game Saturday night at UC Irvine.

OK, it wasn't pretty, but Mike Krzyzewski isn't going to throw it back. "It's too bad," Krzyzewski said after Steve Wojciechowski made two free throws with seven-tenths of a second to play--after a timekeeping dispute--and gave No. 6 Duke a 62-61 victory over Virginia on Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va. "It's a very difficult loss for them," the Duke coach said. "We feel fortunate to win, but we made a winning play." Cavalier Coach Jeff Jones was having a difficult time.

Lou Cvijanovich, the boys' basketball coach at Santa Clara High, has seen his teams win 720 games. He's twice seen them win more than 80 Frontier League games in a row. Cvijanovich is in his 36th season coaching the Saints. He was coaching when "Louie Louie" was a hit record on Billboard's charts. He's been around long enough to see everything, but not long enough to get a surprise. The emergence of senior Damian Cantrell this season caught Cvijanovich off guard.

Earl Boykins and Eastern Michigan managed to do what no other team has since 1955--beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Boykins scored 23 points and Brian Tolbert added 20 as the Eagles upset the Blue Devils, 75-60, Thursday in the Southeast Regional. Eastern Michigan, the ninth seed, will play top-seeded Connecticut in the second round on Saturday.

The Serra High boys' basketball team had that polished look, the look of a defending state champion--which it was. The Cavaliers took the court with a player who is going to Duke next year, Ricky Price. They could dunk, they could jump (boy, they could jump). But after tipping off against Santa Clara, a group of seeming ragamuffins, they couldn't do any of those things.

Chris Webber's sprained left ankle will be re-evaluated later this week, though the Sacramento Kings still believe their All-NBA forward will miss at least a month of action. Webber, who signed a seven-year, $123-million contract during the off-season, suffered a high ankle sprain five minutes into the Kings' 107-88 exhibition victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night. The team said Webber is expected to miss four to six weeks.

As this high-profile, six-game series came to a close, Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski on Sunday put the onus directly on UCLA for choosing to end it. "Absolutely, it was UCLA's decision," Krzyzewski said after Duke's 36-point victory. "I would never stop a series like this . . "I'm sad that it's over. . . . We need big games. This is a big game, Duke-UCLA. They're down a little with [Jelani] McCoy gone. But year in, year out, it's a wash."
