When I lived in the Northwest 15 years ago, I loved to go mountain biking on the trails around devastated Mt. St. Helens, which blew its top in 1980. More than 50 died. Cyclists who'd like to see how St. Helens has changed -- and mellowed -- in the ensuing three-plus decades may want to consider a pair of intermediate to advanced tours by Bicycle Adventures that includes three other volcanoes - - all dormant, of course. The trip along the Pacific Northwest's Ring of Fire is an eight-day, seven-night road ride from Seattle to Portland by way of some 20 major volcanic centers that comprise the Pacific Northwest's Cascade Range.

Much of the Earth's surface has been shaped by volcanic activity. Mt. Unzen, which erupted eight days ago in southwestern Japan, had been dormant for about 200 years before its recent activity. In 1792, the same volcano caused landslides and tidal waves that killed 15,000 people in Japan's worst volcanic disaster. It rumbled to life again late last year, with the eruption that began June 3 killing at least 38 people, including Harry Glicken, 33, of Los Angeles, a noted volcanologist.

Keeping up with Boris Becker's marriage proposals takes some doing, but the former tennis star made things easier this time by announcing his latest wedding plans on a popular German variety show. Booked onto the show "You Bet . . . ?" along with former girlfriend Lilly Kerssenberg, Becker surprised nearly 10 million viewers -- and Kerssenberg -- by saying he would marry the Dutch model in June.

In another age, the Blair brothers might have been Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Thor Heyerdahl, Lewis and Clark, Stanley and Livingstone. For 10 years, Lawrence and Lorne Blair explored the most remote jungles and beaches of the nearly 14,000 islands of Indonesia. They hitched rides aboard primitively beautiful sailing sloops with pirates in search of the mythical Greater Bird of Paradise.

The Johnny Cash movie "Walk the Line" may have returned "the man in black" to the limelight, but a new Broadway musical based on his songs received a sharp knockdown by critics Monday. Created with Cash's blessing before his death in 2003, the musical "Ring of Fire" is one of the major productions to open on Broadway this year, and the weak reviews bode ill for its commercial prospects. Preview showings were a little more than half sold.

Tony, Tony, Tony. Less than two weeks after his Paris wedding to actress Eva Longoria, San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker says wearing his wedding ring feels "weird." ""I don't wear rings," Parker said. " ... The only ring that I was wearing is our championship rings, but you only wear that maybe two times, three times maybe. So I have to get used to it." In fairness to Parker, he certainly sounds smitten with Longoria.

Merle Kilgore, a musician and businessman who began his long, varied career in country music as a teenage gofer for Hank Williams and ended as the manager of Hank Williams Jr., died Sunday in Mexico of congestive heart failure related to treatment for cancer. He was 70. Kilgore was also a singer, songwriter, radio host and actor, but his most famous contribution to country music is Johnny Cash's 1963 hit "Ring of Fire," which he co-wrote with June Carter, who later married Cash.

The flames quietly circled the rustic getaway before dawn Thursday, creeping toward nearly 2,000 sleeping vacationers hoping to enjoy a weekend in the mountains. Before they knew it, Silent Valley RV Resort was surrounded by a wall of fire so thick and dense that stepping a few feet outside the park perimeter meant incineration, witnesses say. Residents endured a tense standoff with the Esperanza blaze as a small army of firefighters battled to keep the ring of fire at bay.

Barry Alvarez was sitting at a conference table with his Wisconsin coaching staff before their first recruiting mission four years ago when he looked down at his hands. He was wearing a national championship ring from Notre Dame, where he had been defensive coordinator in 1988. "I looked around the table, and all the guys were wearing rings," Alvarez said. Dan McCarney and Bernie Wyatt had Rose Bowl rings from Iowa. Bill Callahan and Kevin Cosgrove had Illinois Rose Bowl rings.

In a remote part of Western Australia, a two-hour drive from the nearest town of Meekatharra, Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd. is building a water supply for a small town it is developing to support its gold find. When gold production starts late this year at the Fortnum mine, workers will be flown into the remote location on a rotating basis. Back in the 1960s, astronomy was a consuming passion of mine. I looked forward with keen anticipation to four "far-future" events: the return of Comet Halley in 1985; the total solar eclipses of Feb. 26, 1979, and July 11, 1991 (both viewable from places not far from my native California), and the annular solar eclipse of Jan. 4, 1992. To date, I've had the pleasure of witnessing three of these events at just the right places and times, under beautifully transparent skies.

In a year during which Southern California has braced for civil unrest, an unexpected conflagration Wednesday forced thousands of residents to cope with falling ash, power outages, blocked roads and the nagging sense that, in so many ways, we reside on combustible terrain. Across the fire-ringed region, telephone lines were saturated, freeway off-ramps were closed, bus lines were rerouted, train service was delayed and schools were converted into emergency shelters.
