A federal judge in Las Vegas has ordered rock star Rod Stewart to pay a casino there more than $3 million for not returning advance money he was paid before he canceled a concert in 2000. U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks ordered Stewart's lawyers to pay an additional $153,483 in contempt-of-court sanctions and legal costs for failing to turn over information to lawyers for casino giant Harrah's Entertainment before trial last year.

The former chief of America West Airlines plans to start a new airline based in Las Vegas that is scheduled to start offering nonstop flights from major U.S. cities by early 1999. Mike Conway, who helped start America West Airlines and served as its chief executive before leaving in 1993, said he has obtained more than $50 million to support the venture, to be called National Airlines. Backers include Rio Hotel & Casino Inc. and Harrah's Entertainment Inc.

Seeking to expand its presence in Las Vegas, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. on Monday said it had agreed to merge with Rio Hotel & Casino Inc.--a 2,500-room casino-hotel off the Las Vegas Strip--in a deal valued at $888 million.
