Each side blamed the other Friday for a clash between hundreds of supporters of suspended Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald and tribal police officers that left two people dead and nine injured. Police "randomly opened fire on Navajo civilians" during a protest late Thursday at the tribal government complex, MacDonald said in a statement. He said he was "shocked, appalled and angered" at the police actions.

More than 370 inmates were moved to new quarters after a riot apparently sparked by complaints about the food ravaged a section of the Arizona State Prison Complex. One prison worker was hurt in the riot Saturday night at the Apache Unit of the prison. About 170 prisoners set fire to electrical and communications rooms, broke windows and destroyed a trailer.
