A downtown celebration by about 400,000 Dallas Cowboy fans dissolved into sporadic violence Tuesday as police attempted to control surging crowds. The swarm of people halted the celebration parade, although no players or parade participants were injured. Running back Emmitt Smith said he removed his trademark jewelry after one fan, in an attempt to kiss him, climbed onto the convertible in which he was riding. "You can't get away from these people," he said with a smile.

Britain's real villains Re "British leader cites 'moral collapse,' " Aug. 16 I had to snicker when I read that Prime Minister David Cameron cited "moral collapse" and a culture of selfish indifference and greed as the cause of the riots and looting in Britain last week. I think the rioters were just following in the footsteps of those higher up on the socioeconomic ladder: the bankers and investment traders who looted and trashed the economy. Cameron's government may seek to strip welfare benefits from the looters who perpetrated such outrages.

Hundreds of partying young people on spring break rioted on a Gulf Coast beach in Port Aransas, Tex., during the night before more than 100 police officers moved in with tear gas and helicopters. At least four people were stabbed and two law officers were injured in the midnight beach melee, police said. Eight people were arrested, and one person remained hospitalized. Police estimated that about 30,000 students were staying in the island resort for the school break.

Federal officials Wednesday sent additional staff members to one of the nation's busiest amnesty centers in an attempt to placate aliens who had staged a near-riot when told their applications would not be processed.
