Rita Moreno and her husband, Dr. Leonard Gordon, have bought a penthouse in the new Manhattan high-rise, 100 United Nations Plaza. And if the name of the tower isn't impressive enough, get this: Moreno's is just one of 23 penthouses in the 52-story condominium building on East 48th Street. The penthouses occupy the top nine floors--"the largest number (of penthouses) ever built in a residential building," a spokeswoman for the Albanese Development Corp. said.

Rita Moreno might be a little tired when she jets into San Diego today for four nights of headlining as a singer at the San Diego Symphony's Summer Pops '88 program at Hospitality Point. Moreno is flying in from a shoot at the Beverly Hills set of a PBS movie called "The Closed Set," in which she plays Julie Forbes, a middle-aged actress who tries to rescue her failing career with a movie role "that may well break her back."

Rita Moreno has flourished on stage and screens, big and small. A few of her credits: 'The Ritz' Moreno earned a Tony as hapless performer Googie Gomez in Terrence McNally's 1975 Broadway comedy and reprised her role in the 1976 film. 'West Side Story' Moreno won the supporting actress Oscar as Maria's fiery sister, Anita, in the 1961 best picture winner. 'Oz' Moreno was one of the few actresses on HBO's gritty 1997-2003 prison drama "Oz," playing counselor Sister Peter Marie.
