The first season of TNT's crime drama "Rizzoli & Isles" featured an episode with the title "I Kissed a Girl. " Its stars, Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, played on a softball team, shared some intimate dinners, drank wine over candlelight and hopped into the same bed for girl talk. But this is not a gay show. Series creator Janet Tamaro described Harmon's Rizzoli and Alexander's Isles as a "power couple" — the center of a buddy drama, one that broke cable ratings records in its debut run and returns for its second season July 11. But the women are not together, as in together . Tamaro chalks up the rampant are-they-or-aren't-they discussion to throwing "two gorgeous actresses together who have great, natural chemistry.

Veena Sud was tired of watching female cops in Louboutins chase down bad guys. "In cop dramas, there's a preponderance of female cops who wear stilettos, and it drives me nuts," says the television writer and showrunner, a veteran of CBS' procedural "Cold Case. " "I mean, I'm not showing up to work in a poodle skirt. " So when Sud adapted the AMC series "The Killing," which is based on the Danish hit "Forbrydelsen" and was also a smash hit in the U.K., she decided that the heroine should wear sneakers.

Sasha Alexander had suspicions about her character from the start. But it wasn't until Maura Isles obsessed over a date's skin condition that Alexander got it: She was playing a geek. "She held his hand and said, 'You have very dry hands.' And she couldn't get it out of her head," recalls Alexander, whose Isles character is a medical examiner on TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles. " "He was so weirded out, he left dinner. That moment solidified it for me. That's when I realized she was a geek — she can't control herself around the things she knows so much about.

Frank Darabont left AMC's "The Walking Dead" in a dispute with the network last year during production of the hit zombie series' second season. But while the zombies are continuing to shuffle over there, Darabont is back with a new series, and he's got several familiar faces with him. TNT has ordered six episodes of the currently untitled series, set in Los Angeles during the 1940s and '50s, that follows the exploits of cops and mobsters. It's based on the book "L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America's Most Seductive City" by John Buntin, which told the story of the battle between Los Angeles Police Department chief William Parker and mobster Mickey Cohen.
