If atmosphere counts, if having fans in seats, fans who make noise, who clap or boo or even just go buy a hot dog, if any of that matters, then USC had no chance Sunday at Galen Center against Cal State Bakersfield. But if it is the team that should provide the atmosphere, if it is the team that is supposed to make the fans clap or boo or stand and shout, then USC also should have had no chance against Bakersfield. The Trojans, coming off their two best victories of the season, against Xavier and Boston College, played with the energy of Santa Claus after he traveled around the world and dropped off his last gift.

Buckley Coach Ron Cooper was shaking his head while watching his team warm up before Tuesday's game against Crossroads. "If we play better than any of my teams have played in the last five years and make them play their worst game in the last two years--then it will be close," Cooper said. Cooper was almost right. Buckley played its best game of the season, and Crossroads played one of its worst, but it still wasn't enough as the Griffins lost, 84-69, in a Delphic League basketball game at home.

The speedy tailbacks have graduated and the execution on the offensive line was a little shaky, but it appears Saddleback High School has another good football team. Saddleback gained 216 yards rushing and quarterback Sean Therien teamed up with receiver Neil Carter for two touchdowns Thursday night as the Roadrunners breezed to a 22-0 victory over Santa Ana Valley in front of 2,500 fans in Santa Ana Stadium.

UCLA tonight VS. CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD When: 7:30. Where: Pauley Pavilion. On the air: TV: FS West; Radio: 570. Records: UCLA 0-1, Bakersfield 1-1. Record vs. opponent: First meeting. Update: The Bruins need to show something -- anything -- after a troubling loss to Cal State Fullerton in the season opener. A better shooting percentage, from the field and the free-throw line, would be a good start. Now in its third season at the Division I level, Cal State Bakersfield lost to Santa Clara in the waning seconds before bouncing back against Utah Valley.

The burden of a great reputation seemed to weigh heavily on the members of Saddleback High School's basketball team Friday night in the Sea View League opener at Costa Mesa. The Roadrunners (8-4), a tall group of fine shooters, found themselves in an unlikely position, eating Costa Mesa's dust through most of the game. But an 11-point spurt by junior guard Bryant Walton in the third quarter propelled the Roadrunners into the game, and they finally managed to slip away with a 54-53 victory.

Bullet Freight Systems Inc., based in Anaheim, has been purchased by national trucking company Roadrunner Transportation Services Holdings Inc.
