Rob Evans won't return for a ninth season as Arizona State's coach. The school made the announcement Friday, a few hours after Evans, 59, had an hour-long meeting with Athletic Director Lisa Love. Love didn't say whether Evans had been fired or quit. She said the university would pay Evans for the final year of his contract. Evans had a record of 119-120.

Rob Evans will remain coach at Mississippi, bypassing an offer from Louisiana State. "The overriding theme with me was our players," Evans said. "I just didn't feel like I could walk away from these kids when they have shown so much trust and loyalty in me." Without any seniors this season, the Rebels went 20-9, won the Southeastern Conference Western Division title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for only the second time in school history.

USC Coach Henry Bibby was still seething Sunday over the circumstances that led to the brief postgame fight between the Trojans' Jeff Trepagnier and Arizona State's Awvee Storey. Specifically Bibby said someone "framed" USC for the practice basketballs that had obscenities toward Arizona State scuffed on the leather cover. "To say we did that is an outright lie," Bibby said. "When [assistant coach Dave] Miller and I went over to the arena that Saturday morning, we saw several balls on the practice rack that were marked up. We tried to clean them off. We don't do things like that at USC. "I should have been suspicious when we went to the arena that morning and no one was there.
