About a year ago--when the advertising industry in Los Angeles was beginning to free fall--Rob Frankel had five employees, a fat lease expiring on his Van Nuys office space and a baseball-size knot in his stomach. Today, working out of his Encino home, Frankel's only paid employee is himself. And the knot in his stomach is gone. "You have no idea what kind of waste goes on at an agency," said Frankel, whose unpaid associates at Frankel & Anderson are two collies and a German shepherd.

Marketers have always loved consumers who so identify with a brand that they become its evangelists, wearing the logo on their backsides and preaching to their friends about its virtues. "TV's Rising Moguls: Young and Restless" (Oct. 7) needs to be expanded into a true expose as to how incompetent these kids really are. Almost none of this "new generation" of entertainment "execs" possesses any of the education, maturity or judgment necessary to create a substantial, credible industry. Dig deeper, and you will find they have very little personal experience or social skills, but lots of personal and social connections. Anyone who has survived the last decade in this town knows how important the entertainment industry is to its economy--and this is in whose hands it's left to be managed?

Actor Danny DeVito, following in a long line of celebrities -- including Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor -- wants to become a brand name. Danny DeVito's Premium Limoncello arrives on the market in August. The idea for it came to him after he embarrassed himself in November on ABC's "The View," still feeling the effects of drinking multiple Limoncellos -- a lemon-flavored liqueur -- the night before while out with George Clooney.

My "informational" appointment with a "counselor" a few years ago was anything but pleasant. It was a nightmare hour of arm-twisting, guilt trips and sleaze spent with a predator working on commission. Ultimately, I met my wife through friends. STAN BROTHERS Los Angeles Ullman and Great Expectations have sent me those direct-mail questionnaires, too. Several hundred thousand single Angelenos like me cannot purchase his services because we are gay or lesbian.

It is a chilling anniversary. Two years ago this month, Karen Toshima, a 27-year-old advertising agency art director, was shot in the head and killed in random gang violence in Westwood. Since that time, gang violence has only grown worse. And so has the sense of helplessness of many Los Angeles area residents. But the Van Nuys ad agency where Toshima worked has decided to take action--not just for her, but for all victims of gang violence.

Google is officially a verb. Google Inc.'s eponymous search engine became a sanctioned part of the English language Thursday, when "google" -- with a small "g" -- earned an entry among the 165,000 or so terms in the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. The definition: "to use the Google search engine to obtain information ... on the World Wide Web." As in, "Let me google that." Linguists said google entered the lexicon especially quickly.
