Authorities captured a suspected killer hiding in a quiet Laguna Beach neighborhood, just two days after he managed to slip away from the same spot. Earlier in the week, Laguna Beach Police had told residents they were confident that the suspect, Mark A. Booher, 36, was no longer in the area. But authorities found Booher in the same neighborhood late Wednesday night after tracing phone calls the suspect made to his girlfriend and parents in Indiana.

A task force met Saturday to examine evidence in its investigation of a string of shotgun slayings that has left seven people dead over as many weeks and terrified northwest Indiana residents. Portage police Sgt. Warren Lewis said Friday the list of suspects has been narrowed to "several people," but that none had been picked up for questioning. Law officers say they believe one man is responsible for the attacks.

Three female members of a Los Angeles gang suspected of helping four men rob an Indianapolis jewelry store have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a failed holdup attempt near Cincinnati. The women entered their pleas in U.S. District Court at Covington, Ky., on Tuesday. They agreed to help authorities in prosecuting four men who are members of their gang, which was not named, officials said. A murder convict whose 1994 release date had been abruptly rescinded by the state Board of Prison Terms was freed this week after the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found he no longer was dangerous and had been unlawfully denied parole. Lawyers for other inmates said the release late Wednesday of Carl McQuillion, who had served 30 years for two murders in Long Beach, marked the first time in memory that a court has ordered a convict freed due to an error by the parole board.
