Cruising for a target, two robbery suspects pulled up to a Ventura County liquor store Monday night, apparently unaware that 13 members of a heavily armed, elite Los Angeles police squad were shadowing them in undercover cars. Police watched the pair park their small white car on a dark side street, tug bandannas over their mouths, draw pistols and barge into the South West Liquor & Deli in Newbury Park.

Three masked men, one brandishing a rifle and another a handgun, robbed a Thousand Oaks credit union early Monday, terrorizing customers and employees. As construction crews worked outside, the three robbers in hard hats and jumpsuits slipped into the Ventura County Federal Credit Union in the 200 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard about 10:50 a.m. After revealing their guns, the suspects ordered everyone to the floor.

Law enforcement officials looking into a recent spate of so-called "gypsy crimes" in Ventura County are investigating the possibility that at least some are linked to a low-level organized crime ring operating nationwide. Police who arrested four men for allegedly stealing $3,000 from an elderly couple in Ventura last month say they have so far connected at least one of them to similar crimes as far away as Georgia and Illinois.

One of two suspects in the fatal shooting of a Ventura grocery store clerk has been identified and a warrant issued for his arrest on suspicion of murder, authorities said Tuesday. Alfonso Acosta Delgado Jr., 25, of Ventura is being sought in the death of Alejandro Alvarez, a 35-year-old father of two who was gunned down April 6 at Central Market on Ventura Avenue, authorities said.

As his mother quietly wept, Kenneth McKinzie Jr. was sentenced Thursday to die by lethal injection for beating and strangling a 73-year-old Oxnard woman during a botched Christmastime robbery 3 1/2 years ago. Defense attorneys for the four-time felon urged Ventura County Superior Court Judge Vincent J. O'Neill Jr. not to impose such a severe sentence, arguing that McKinzie, 38, has admitted and apologized for his crimes.

An armed robber whose partner was killed in a gun battle with an elite Los Angeles police unit was convicted Tuesday of his murder. Accepting an unusual legal theory from prosecutors, a Ventura County jury found Robert Wayne Cunningham, 33, of Reseda guilty of first-degree murder and seven other counts in connection with a June 1995 robbery in Newbury Park.

A bandit robbed a pizza restaurant manager walking to her car with the night's receipts in Camarillo early Saturday morning when he leaped out of a tree and pointed a gun at her, deputies said. The unidentified assistant manager, who gave the robber a bank bag containing an undisclosed sum of money, was not injured.

A 21-year-old clerk was shot and killed Sunday during a robbery at the market where he worked, Ventura County sheriff's deputies said. Marco Aurelio Rodriguez of Canoga Park was shot several times in the head about 11:25 a.m. as he worked at a cash register at Carniceria Rodriguez. His killer took an undetermined amount of money from the store and fled without being seen by the other store employees.

As detectives continued their search for two gunmen in a deadly Friday afternoon market robbery, one of the survivors was taken off the critical list Saturday. Mohan Singh, 42, co-owner of Central Market, was upgraded to fair condition after being shot in the chest, said an official at Ventura County Medical Center. Two masked gunmen tied up several employees and stole $4,000 in cash during an early morning robbery at Office Depot, police said. The robbers followed three employees and a manager through a back door when they arrived at 4 a.m., Police Sgt. Marty Meyer said. The attackers ordered them to the floor at gunpoint and bound their hands behind their backs with tape. After forcing the manager to open the safe, the robbers fled. No one was injured and the victims didn't see a getaway car.

Three hours after they were foiled in an attempt Thursday to steal $1,200 worth of cigarettes from a supermarket, two men were arrested when they headed into a tobacco shop across the street, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. Samou Davodyan, 20, and Karlos Melkon, 20, both Glendale residents, were being held at the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station on Thursday night, Sgt. Richard Larue said.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers is offering $1,000 for information about a robbery Tuesday in the parking lot of the K mart in Thousand Oaks. Witnesses say a man punched a Thousand Oaks woman in the stomach and grabbed her purse as she walked through the lot. He and another man then ran away and got into a black 1991 Chevy Blazer with tinted windows and a luggage rack. A third man was driving the car, according to Crime Stoppers.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers is looking for a robber who wore sparkled gloves to hold up movie theater complexes in Ventura and Thousand Oaks. Police said the robber, described as a white male in his 30s, used a nearly identical method for the two movie theaters. Ventura Police Detective Kevin Williams said the robber could be a disgruntled former employee of the Mann Theater chain, which owns both complexes. The man robbed the Buenaventura 6 on Eastman Avenue in Ventura the night of June 1.

During a brief appearance in Juvenile Court on Friday, a 21-year-old Santa Paula gang member denied killing Ventura teenager Jesse Strobel during an attempted robbery six years ago. Jose "Pepe" Castillo, who remains a suspect in another homicide case, is facing charges in Juvenile Court because he was 15 at the time of the Strobel slaying. Castillo was arrested April 6 on suspicion of fatally stabbing the 17-year-old Ventura High School athlete.

A Ventura County prosecutor urged jurors Monday to send convicted killer Kenneth McKinzie to death row, calling his statements of remorse the hollow words of a desperate criminal. "He has told you a lie to save his neck," Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald Glynn said in closing arguments of McKinzie's penalty trial. But defense attorneys Willard Wiksell and James Farley argued that their client's sorrow is genuine, and asked the jury not to execute a man who has accepted responsibility for his actions.
