Eight American Airlines baggage handlers were charged with stealing valuables from bags they handled at National Airport, FBI officials said Thursday. Airport police and the FBI installed hidden cameras in the baggage area and recorded numerous instances of the workers breaking into baggage. The workers would examine the contents and remove valuables such as video cameras, jewelry and laptop computers, the FBI said.

Accosted by two men in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Va., Friday night, Fabiani drove into Washington where he got the money with credit cards and a cash card, Alexandria Police Lt. Syndicated columnist Jack Anderson said Friday that he was robbed of a small amount of cash after being hit on the head by an assailant carrying a pipe. Anderson, who has written about Washington politics for the last 43 years, said the attack occurred Thursday afternoon outside his office about eight blocks north of the White House. The assailant took an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing on foot.

Teresa Heinz, wife of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), was robbed at gunpoint as she and the wife of a State Department official were walking to a car after attending a play. Heinz and Wren Wirth, wife of Undersecretary of State Timothy E. Wirth were not hurt. Heinz is the widow of Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.), who died in a 1991 collision of an airplane and a helicopter.

Rep. Gerry E. Studds was beaten on a Washington street corner early Friday by two men looking for "something to do," a Secret Service spokesman said. A spokesman for the Massachusetts Democrat said: "Gerry was mugged and beaten up pretty bad, but the bottom line is he's OK." The attackers knocked Studds down, then punched and kicked him in the head and body while a third man egged them on, according to U.S. Atty. Jay B. Stephens.

Traxler, 60, was reported in good condition after receiving a number of stitches. The congressman is expected to be released from Washington Hospital Center today. "One of the guys knocked me down," Colby said.
