His position as the state's top law enforcement authority did not protect Jerry Brown -- or his car -- when thieves made off with two of the attorney general's tires last week. While Brown was in Sacramento on business last Friday, someone swiped the passenger-side tires off his Toyota Camry Hybrid, which was parked in front of his home. Brown spokesman Scott Gerber said the attorney general filed a police report and that no suspects had been identified. Police were looking for two armed thieves who set up camp in an empty business on Broadway, then broke through a wall into an adjacent jewelry store and robbed the owner of more than $500,000 in gold chains and earrings. The heist was reported at B. Lewis Jewelry Manufacturing at 610 S. Broadway on Friday afternoon, about the same time as the May Day protest downtown, said LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon. It was not immediately clear if the robbery was timed to coincide with the protest, but Vernon said the thieves took unusual steps, including staying in the business overnight and employing a listening device to monitor employees.

This holiday season has seen an explosion in thefts of expensive, platinum-laced catalytic converters from parked cars, and authorities report that high-clearance sport utility vehicles are the targets of choice for thieves. With a common socket wrench and 90 seconds, they leave drivers stuck with cars that sound like Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and facing repair bills topping $1,000. "It's an epidemic. It's everywhere," said Lt. Bob Turnbull of the El Segundo Police Department.
