A prowler broke into the home of a sleeping 76-year-old woman Friday, raped her and stole money she had left out, police said. "The sexual assault was the motive, because it looks like the person entered just with that intent," said Detective Mike Coffey of the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Division. "If anything, the taking of the property might have been an afterthought."

A Superior Court jury has found a convicted auto thief guilty of murdering a bank customer during a Lancaster robbery that was videotaped by an automated teller machine's security camera. Attorneys in both sides of the case said the video footage of the crime and self-incriminating statements set the stage for the verdict against 21-year-old Christopher Arthur Mann, who escaped from a Van Nuys halfway house a week before the robbery and fatal shooting of Hans Christian Herzog.

A clerk at a gas station convenience store was killed early Monday during an apparent robbery, Los Angeles police said. Mohammed Abdul Khaled, 26, of Los Angeles, was working alone at an Arco AM-PM mini-mart on the 600 block of South Catalina Street when someone entered the store about 1:20 a.m. and shot him once in the torso, authorities said. A man who bought a Pioneer Take Out in Sunland just six weeks ago was shot and critically wounded in his restaurant during what may have been a botched robbery, Los Angeles police said Friday. Louis Lim, 35, of Baldwin Park was listed in critical condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills. Lim was shot once in the chest about 3:15 p.m. Thursday after a man entered the office of the restaurant at 8668 Foothill Blvd., Detective Jim Vojtecky said Friday.

A 29-year-old Harbor City man was held without bail Tuesday on suspicion of killing a San Pedro contractor during a residential robbery, Los Angeles police said. Kevin McNeal Watson was arrested after the shooting death of Richard Mavar, 30, in his home Sunday night. The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. when an intruder, armed with a high-powered rifle, surprised Mavar and his wife as they sat in their family room.

A reputed San Pedro gang member who police say imitated the killer in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" films has been ordered to stand trial for murder and seven other felonies. San Pedro Municipal Judge Richard Berry held Angelo Regino, 19, for trial for the murder and attempted robbery of San Pedro longshoreman Johnny Healy. If convicted, Regino could be sentenced to death.
