Sheriff's deputies have arrested a second man in connection with a home invasion robbery in Lancaster in which four women were raped, officials said Monday. Deputies arrested Richard Nieto, 28, of Palmdale, at a bar in Lancaster on Sunday night, authorities said. Lt. Thomas Pigott said deputies now doubt that the man arrested more than a week ago was involved in the Jan. 19 attack at a Lancaster apartment.

A 33-year-old man was stabbed to death inside his home early Tuesday during a robbery, Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies said. John Putjentar and his wife, Donna, were confronted by two pistol-carrying robbers as they drove up to their house in the 36800 block of Camden Court early Tuesday, Deputy Benita Nichol said. The men forced the couple out of the car and into the house, which they ransacked, Nichol said.

Authorities believe that a 69-year-old Lancaster man discovered dead in his apartment was the victim of a robbery, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday. A neighbor found Eddie Mead on Monday morning in his apartment in the 45300 block of Sierra Highway, Deputy Rich Erickson said. Erickson said it appeared that Mead had been robbed prior to his death, but the deputy did not say what had been taken from the apartment.

A Palmdale man was fatally shot in what may have been a robbery, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said today. Robert Breedlove, 24, was shot at 10:45 p.m. Saturday in his apartment in the 400 block of East Avenue Q-3, Sgt. Bob Perry said. Breedlove, who deputies said had been hit in the head with a shotgun blast, was taken to Palmdale Medical Center, where he died Sunday afternoon.

Murder charges were filed Thursday against two would-be robbers whose accomplice was killed during an aborted robbery of marijuana and cash at a Canoga Park house earlier this week, authorities said. Police are searching for a third man suspected of masterminding the Monday night robbery.

The death penalty is prescribed under California law for murder. My brother was murdered during an attempted robbery in Los Angeles County. I phoned the prosecuting deputy district attorney and asked why the death penalty wasn't sought. I was informed that 10 years ago it would have been but today a committee in the district attorney's office decided because of the costs involved in appeals, it's cheaper to seek life imprisonment without parole. The district attorney's office had no doubts that this was a murder.

A robber who jumped over the counter at a Beverly Hills bank and took about $3,000 was caught Saturday by customers who held him until police arrived. Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Richard Westfall said the suspect, James Cunningham, 36, entered the Security Pacific Bank branch in the 400 block of North Beverly Drive at 10:45 a.m. and gave a note to a teller. Cunningham jumped over the counter and grabbed cash from the teller's drawer, Westfall said.

A jewelry store employee was shot and killed in a robbery Friday, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies said. Deputies responded to a 911 call at 1:11 p.m. from a person who looked into Charles Jewelers, at 38513 Sierra Highway, and saw smashed display cases, said Deputy Larry Mead of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. "Deputies arrived and looked through the open door and saw the store's employee lying on the floor," Mead said.
