BURBANK LAST SEASON: 20-6, 9-1 in league THIS SEASON: Burbank will attempt to win its third consecutive league title. "We're just an outstanding team," Coach Russ Keith said. The reason for optimism is four returning players: Bryan Chandler, a 6-2 senior guard; Abo Velasco, a 5-9 senior guard; Chris Buck, a 5-9 senior forward; and Mark Nielsen, a 6-3 junior guard. The fifth starting position is "up for grabs," Keith says.

Sunny, an 8-year-old parrot, wouldn't land a spot on the "Stupid Pet Tricks" segment of the David Letterman show, but he drew a crowd Sunday at Bird Expo, a bird swap meet held at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Sunny didn't say a lot--just "Hello" and "I love you"--but it was enough to charm spectators.

They don't require pooper-scoopers, flea dips or a big back yard. Those are some of the reasons Lance Bryson thinks birds are fast becoming the pet of choice. Bryson, organizer of Sunday's Bird Expo at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, says that because of the large number of people who live in apartments and condos, prospective pet owners are flocking to birds.

Abo Velasco and Chris Buck each scored 19 points as Burbank High earned a tie with Schurr for its third straight Foothill League title with a 71-58 victory over Burroughs at Burbank. Burbank (16-8, 7-3), which never trailed, held a 39-37 halftime lead and after three quarters, Burroughs trailed by only four, 53-49. But in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs outscored Burroughs, 18-9, to secure the victory. Burroughs (2-8 in league) was led by Ian Grant with 15 points.
