Galaxy forward Robbie Keane was named Major League Soccer's player of the week on Tuesday, three days after he scored two goals and assisted on another in his team's 3-0 win over San Jose. The honor was the second for Keane this season and the third for a Galaxy player in the last month. Keane, who leads the team in goals and assists, helped get the scoring started with a perfectly timed pass to free Landon Donovan, who capped a long run by deking Earthquakes' keeper Jon Busch out of the net, then slipping the ball into the goal behind him. That assist was Keane's 10th, making him the only MLS player with double-digit totals for goals and assists this season.

Maybe it was the emotion of the moment. Or the difficulty of trying to find the right word in his third language. Either way, when Galaxy midfielder Marcelo Sarvas likened last month's Champions League series with Tijuana to a war, teammate Baggio Husidic could only shake his head. Husidic has experienced a real war. Trapped between competing armies in his native Bosnia, Husidic and his family fled for their lives, abandoning their comfortable home for a squalid refugee camp.

The Galaxy began the season without Landon Donovan and now they may be without their other designated player, Robbie Keane, after Keane was ruled out of Ireland's World Cup qualifier with Austria on Tuesday with a calf injury. "A scan ... confirmed that Robbie is suffering from calf strain after Friday's game with Sweden," the Football Association of Ireland said in a statement. Keane, the Irish captain, came out of the 1-1 draw with Sweden in the 74th minute, It's uncertain how long Keane could be out, but his absence for even one game would be felt by the Galaxy.

Galaxy forward Robbie Keane and team captain Landon Donovan were named Monday to Major League Soccer's First XI, the league's postseason all-star team. Keane, playing his first full season in MLS, finished fourth in the league in scoring with 16 goals before making five more in the playoffs. Keane also fueled the Galaxy's second-half run to a postseason berth by recording a goal or an assist in 15 of the team's final 19 games. Donovan, who made the team as a midfielder, was second in the league with 14 assists in just 26 games.

A sports agency has sued both the Galaxy and Major League Soccer, claiming it is owed $385,000 for helping bring Irish captain Robbie Keane to MLS last summer. According to Reuters, the complaint, filed by Real Time International Ltd (RTI) in a Manhattan federal court, charges that the Galaxy and the league "exploited information" provided by the agency "without compensation" to complete Keane's $5.7 million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League A spokesman for the Galaxy declined to comment, citing a team policy against discussing pending litigation.

Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane, together again for the first time in five weeks, combined for a tie-breaking goal in the 60th minute Saturday, helping the Galaxy to a 3-1 win over Italian champion Juventus at Dodger Stadium in the second game of an International Champions Cup doubleheader. Real Madrid beat Everton, 2-1, in the first match. Keane, who has been nursing a hip injury, came on in the second half and 15 minutes later, after the Galaxy stripped the ball from Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal Pardo, he found himself rushing up the left wing behind the defense.

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena has repeatedly said striker Robbie Keane was Major League Soccer's best player for much of the season. But apparently he's not among the most valuable. MLS released a list of finalists for its major postseason awards Thursday, and Keane's name was nowhere to found despite the fact he finished fourth in the league in scoring with 16 goals. Keane also finished first in something called the Castrol Index, a mathematical formula similar to the NFL's quarterback rating that measures everything a player does during a game.

The Galaxy reversed course and allowed star forward Robbie Keane to join Ireland's national soccer team for two exhibition games, or friendlies. The Football Assn. of Ireland said Wednesday that Keane, the Irish team's captain, could play in the club's games against England at Wembley Stadium on May 29 and against the nation of Georgia at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on June 2. Keane, 32, initially was expected to miss the matches due to Galaxy commitments but later received clearance, the association said.

When the Galaxy signed Swedish midfielder Stefan Ishizaki this winter, it had one specific goal in mind. “We needed to improve our passing in the midfield,” said Bruce Arena, the team's coach and general manager. “We do that, it allows us to get Robbie Keane close to the goal.” Three starts into his Major League Soccer career Ishizaki is already rewarding Arena's confidence, setting up Keane for the only goal the Galaxy would need in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps before an announced crowd 20,847 at StubHub Center.

So what did we learn Sunday at the StubHub Center? Well, we learned the Galaxy, despite going winless in its first two games, is still one of Major League Soccer's elite teams. We learned that Chivas USA, despite losing just one of its first four games, is still a work in progress. And we learned that for Robbie Keane, the Galaxy forward born and bred in Ireland, a sunny 78-degree day is far from pleasant. “Robbie doesn't necessarily like these conditions,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said.

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando spoiled the night for a sold-out crowd of 25,364 at StubHub Center on Saturday night, blocking a Robbie Keane penalty kick in the 92nd minute to maintain a 1-0 lead that handed the Galaxy a loss in its season opener. Although Real Salt Lake walked off with the 1-0 victory, the conversation of the game will center on questionable calls made by replacement referees who were calling the game after the league's officiating union could not settle a labor dispute before the start of the season.

The Galaxy opens its season Saturday night facing the rival that knocked them out of the playoffs last year: Real Salt Lake. But the Galaxy will field a markedly different team at the StubHub Center after bolstering its ranks with several experienced players during the off-season. The moves were to correct the team's uneven play in 2013. "If there was a weakness last year, it's that we were inconsistent," said Coach Bruce Arena, who last month signed a multiyear contract extension.

The Galaxy's present met its future Saturday at the StubHub Center. And it was likely the future of Major League Soccer that was on display as well. On one side were Robbie Keane, Omar Gonzalez and Landon Donovan, guys you've probably heard of. Let's call them Galaxy I. On the other side - we'll call them Galaxy II - were Travis Bowen, Raul Mendiola and Cody Laurendi, guys you probably haven't heard of. But the organization is hoping those will soon be household names as well, which is why it founded a USL Pro team, basically a minor league affiliate, for whom they can play and train.

The first time Mike Magee was invited to train with the U.S. soccer national team, he was young and cocky and admits he didn't appreciate the honor. So it's probably no surprise that it took nine years before he was asked back. "When you're young you feel like it's just a normal thing and you take it for granted," said Magee, who is at StubHub Center in Carson for Coach Juergen Klinsmann's final extended camp before this summer's World Cup. "I won't make that mistake again. " It took a 21-goal season that ended with Magee hoisting Major League Soccer's most-valuable-player award to change the way the national team looked at the Chicago Fire forward.

Samuel, 22, had 15 goals in 72 appearances over the last two seasons with Fluminense, across all competitions for the club based in Rio de Janeiro. Terms of the loan agreement were not disclosed. It's been a good couple of days for soccer players who formerly wore the blue and white of the Galaxy. First Donovan Ricketts, traded by the Galaxy two years ago, Wednesday was named Major League Soccer's goalkeeper of the year. And then Thursday Mike Magee, traded by the Galaxy to the Chicago Fire in May for the rights to Robbie Rogers, was unveiled as the league's MVP. Magee, 29, finished second in goals scored in the MLS with 21 this season, including six in the first 10 games with the Galaxy.
