A private drive to raise $2.5 million for the new pier has fallen well short of expectations, leaving the city with an estimated $3.8-million shortfall, city officials have reported. With its 18-month contract with the city due to expire at the end of this month, the Robert B. Sharp Co., which is running the Landmark Campaign, has received pledges totaling about half of its goal.

With completion of a $78-million agreement for the city to buy open space in Laguna Canyon from the Irvine Co., attention is turning to private fund-raising efforts and the creation of a "campaign Cabinet" to be composed of big-money civic leaders who will use their clout on behalf of contributions toward preserving the canyon. Laguna Canyon Foundation Chairman Michael Pinto announced this week that the Cabinet will be formed.

Cal State Fullerton announced Wednesday that it is scaling back the target for its athletic department fund-raising campaign, and that the one-year-old drive has netted $1 million in cash and pledges. The campaign's initial goal was to raise $6.3 million in 18 months--$4 million to add furnishings to the new Titan Sports Complex, $1.3 million to cover projected athletic department shortfalls and $1 million for two Titan Athletic Foundation annual membership drives.

The City of Fullerton is in the process of hiring a professional fund-raiser to generate money for the Titan Sports Complex, Cal State Fullerton's on-campus stadium that is scheduled for ground breaking this summer. The Fullerton City Council will consider on April 17 a proposal to retain Robert Sharp, a prominent Orange County fund-raiser. A divided City Council has voted to hire a professional fund-raiser to try to solicit $2.5 million in private donations for the city's planned $11-million to $12-million new pier. The late-night, 5-2 vote Monday came after one councilman said he doubted that the money could be raised and another councilman urged a bond issue instead. Meanwhile, a city staff report showed the cost of the pier. The old pier has been closed since July, 1988, because of its unsafe condition.

The City Council has voted to hire a fund-raising expert to determine whether it is possible to raise about $6 million for a planned Cal State Fullerton sports complex. The joint project by the city and university is about $2.4 million short of the $12.5 million needed to build the type of sports facility originally planned, City Councilman Richard C. Ackerman said.

Characterizing the Pacific Symphony as "a little bit behind" in its effort to raise $1 million by the end of May, board President Stewart Woodard said Friday that the orchestra has hired a professional fund-raising consultant. "We've had this in mind for over 6 months," he said. "It's really routine. We are an organization that is maturing and this is just the next step in our plan. We wouldn't be very smart business people if we didn't have professionals to help manage our campaign."

In launching a two-year, $2.3-million fund-raising campaign, Cal State Fullerton's Titan Athletic Foundation is boldly attempting to go where it has never gone before. The most the booster group has raised in any year is $453,891, in 1989-90, and the past six annual TAF drives combined have generated only about $2.1 million. What's more, TAF drive figures are somewhat deceiving because Fullerton coaches--not the TAF--actually raise a large portion of TAF funds.
