"I hated modern dance. I saw it as these angry, barefooted people with all this angst," Robert Battle recalls. "But I learned to love it, and the first time I understood it, it clicked." Something clicked, at any rate, for at 31, this strapping dancer is also a rising choreographic star. After performing for seven years with the Parsons Dance Company, he founded his own troupe, Battleworks, in 2002. And tonight, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will present the L.A.

Robin Roberts, who overcame breast cancer five years ago, is battling another health scare. The  “Good Morning America” anchor announced Monday that she has myelodysplastic syndrome , a disease of the blood and bone marrow, that was likely caused by her cancer treatment. The 51-year-old anchor learned of the diagnosis on what was supposed to be a victorious day: when "GMA" beat NBC's “Today” show in ratings for the first time in 16 years, she said in a statement on the network's website: "Talk about your highs and lows!"

There is a lot of foot rubbing and neck rolling in the room when you hang out with five men from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on a morning after they've performed "The Hunt. " The furious and powerful ensemble work serves as the main calling card for Robert Battle, artistic director designate, on Ailey's North American tour. Battle, who takes leadership of the company in July, set his all-male work to a pounding percussion score by Les Tambours du Bronx, with raw, exotic fight scenes inspired by Battle's boyhood martial arts devotion.

NEW YORK — It was only a little more than 48 hours since Robert Battle had learned he would be the new artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, but he was getting used to saying "we" as he discussed the organization whose reins he would officially take over in July 2011. The announcement was eagerly awaited in the dance world, since the 51-year-old company has one of the busiest, most high-profile schedules in the dance world, and longtime director Judith Jamison had announced her impending departure two years ago, allowing plenty of time for a careful search.

Battle contended that the fund from which the money was taken was not a union asset and was for use at his discretion.

Raising the bar for sheer physical prowess, Ailey II, the second company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, scorched the roof off Pepperdine University's Smothers Theatre on Friday. Under Sylvia Waters' direction, the dozen dancers proved indefatigable, virtuosic and relentlessly sexy in an eight-part program that included three works new to Southern California. Terrence A. Poplar kicked things off in "Takademe."
