Junior guard Aaron Holiday of Campbell Hall is considered an explosive scorer, but he took that label to a different level on Thursday, scoring 26 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings to a 75-64 win over Viewpoint in an Alpha League game. Holiday also had 13 assists and 10 rebounds. He was scoreless at halftime and had scored just three points going into the fourth quarter, with Campbell Hall trailing, 49-40. He helped the Vikings overcome the absence of guard Kahlil Simplis, who was sick.

Like a shooting star streaking on a cloudless night, Lonzo Ball of Chino Hills creates the same kind of energy and excitement each time he steps onto the basketball court. Maybe it's the precision passes that somehow find their way into the hands of a startled teammate. Maybe it's the sudden burst of spring in his legs as he elevates for a rebound, then dribbles the length of the court. Maybe it's the unselfishness of a 16-year-old who receives as much joy from an assist as making a three-pointer.

There's something inspiring about choosing a school for academic reasons, then not abandoning it when you become a star athlete and others try to lure you away with visions of grandeur. Robert Cartwright is a junior point guard at La Canada Flintridge Prep who could easily play for any big-time basketball program in Southern California. But he's sticking with the Rebels. "It's a fantastic academic school," he said. "The moment I stepped on here in seventh grade, I loved it. The teachers were wonderful, the kids were wonderful and I loved my coach.

The last UCLA point guard target from the class of 2014, Quentin Snider from Ballard High in Kentucky, announced Thursday that he has committed to Illinois. The decision will probably leave first-year UCLA Coach Steve Alford with zero commitments at a critical position for the early signing period in November. On Wednesday, Jordan McLaughlin of Etiwanda committed to USC over UCLA, causing some panic among Bruins fans who earlier saw Parker Jackson-Cartwright of Los Angeles Loyola commit to Arizona and Robert Cartwright of La Canada Flintridge Prep commit to Stanford.

UCLA's drought in attracting top-rated talent at point guard continues. Jordan McLaughlin, a senior from Etiwanda High, announced Wednesday he has committed to accepting a scholarship from USC, choosing the Trojans over the Bruins. McLaughlin is 6 feet with quickness and superior athleticism. He comes from the same high school basketball program that produced Darren Collison (UCLA, Clippers) and is known for getting its players to play tough defense. McLaughlin was a key contributor as Etiwanda won the Southern Section Division 1AA championship last season.
