Five finalists have been selected for the position of athletic director at Cal State Northridge. They are Robert D. Arias, Myles P. Corrigan, Richard M. Dull, William E. Lide and Brian F. Quinn. Each candidate will spend a day on campus between April 27 and May 7, interviewing with administrators, coaches and student-athletes. Each will participate in an on-campus forum and field questions from the campus community. A decision is expected to be reached by the end of May.

A troop of corporate types in dark suits walked softly down the green-carpeted hallway of Pacoima Elementary School on Tuesday morning. At Room 59, they stopped and entered. Inside, Peter Palacio's sixth-grade class welcomed them. "I would like to tell you how happy we are that you gave us these computers," said Sergio Balladares, one of Palacio's students, addressing the group. "I want to thank you," he continued, "for having faith in our school and making our learning a little brighter."

Sure, actor Edward James Olmos talked hypothetically of slashing the man sitting next to him, "Terminator 2" director James Cameron, in the face with broken glass as the pair disagreed over film content.

Robert Arias moonlights as a musician, playing guitar, congas and harmonica in a band called Los Doodz, a seven-member ensemble whose performances benefit a bevy of youth organizations. On Friday, Arias, his followers firmly in tow, pounded a drum for Cal State Northridge. And the beat appeared to be contagious.
