It's a fear of close quarters, one that squeezes Denver tailback Robert Delpino through the smallest of gaps in the line and breaks him free in the tightest of situations. Such is life inside the 10-yard line. "When we get inside there my eyes get big and my heart starts pumping," he said. "It's more of a claustrophobic thing . . . where you want to get out of there, and the end zone is your only release."

After learning that the Denver Broncos would have to play the Raiders again in a wild-card playoff game after playing them last Sunday, Bronco Coach Wade Phillips did not hesitate to predict a different game. "It's going to a lot harder for both teams to move the ball," Phillips said after watching the two teams combine for 63 points and 869 yards in total offense. "I know that it looks like we'll have to change some things on defense, coverage-wise."

Running back Robert Delpino suffered a strained left knee in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers and probably will miss two to three weeks, Coach Chuck Knox said. An examination showed no ligament damage, as feared, and Delpino might not be placed on the injured-reserve list. "We'll probably make a decision (depending on) what Robert Delpino looks like on Wednesday," Knox said.

Running back Robert Delpino joined his teammates for the afternoon practice, ending his five-day holdout without a new contract or a fixed position in the new offense. "One more year I've got to prove myself again, that's fine," Delpino said. "And then after that, I hope it's all over, said and done. But it might not be, I might do it again next year. "Robert Delpino will always have to prove himself to somebody. That's what my career is all about--proving myself.

Tailback Robert Delpino, who spent three years earning his role as the Rams' primary ballcarrier, wasn't pleased Wednesday after learning that Marcus Dupree would do most of the team's rushing for the rest of the season. "You do all you can every day, every year, and it still doesn't seem to be enough," said Delpino, who is still considered the Rams' starting tailback but will be used mostly on passing downs the rest of the way.

Although running back Robert Delpino is eligible to be activated off of the injured-reserve list this week, he said that his injured left knee so far isn't strong enough to consider playing Sunday against the Phoenix Cardinals. "Even if it was the Super Bowl, I don't think I'd take the chance on it this week," Delpino said. "If it was ready, I'd be the first one in there. But the knee's just not ready to go now." Delpino, who suffered the injury Oct.

The Denver Broncos' defense did the dirty work Saturday on a rainy, muddy day at Soldier Field. The Broncos (9-5) intercepted three passes and fell on two fumbles in soiling another performance by the Chicago Bears' ineffective offense. "We had to play their kind of game because of the weather," Denver Coach Wade Phillips said after a 13-3 victory improved the Broncos' playoff chances. "It just shows that we can play any kind of game," Phillips said.

Robert Delpino, who has fought his entire NFL career to be listed as something more than a reserve, isn't enjoying life on injured reserve, either. Before the season, Delpino, the Rams' most valuable player last year, had missed only two games in his four-year NFL career. This week, because of a strained left knee that hasn't healed, Delpino is watching his current absent string go from four to five missed games.

The Rams plan to put running back Robert Delpino on the injured-reserve list today to recover from the strained left knee ligaments he suffered in last Sunday's game. Delpino is expected to miss four weeks, Coach Chuck Knox said. With the Rams' bye week Oct. 25, Delpino will miss only three games if he stays on injured reserve the minimum four weeks. Knox indicated Wednesday that the Rams probably will activate rookie fullback Tim Lester off the practice squad to replace Delpino.

Running back Robert Delpino suffered strained ligaments in his left knee during Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers and probably will miss two to three weeks, Coach Chuck Knox said Monday. When Delpino hurt his knee, it was originally feared he had torn ligaments. But a magnetic-resonance imaging test Monday showed no ligament tear, and Delpino might not be placed on the injured-reserve list.

Cornerback Robert Bailey, who became a starter when Todd Lyght injured his shoulder against Miami, got his first interception Sunday when he stepped in front of Jerry Rice and then weaved 24 yards for a touchdown. Bailey, never at a loss for confidence or words, on how to play one of the game's greatest receivers: "I didn't respect him and lay off him. Too many defensive backs respect him and that's why they get in trouble."
