Virginia Admiral, 85, a painter and writer and the mother of actor Robert DeNiro. The Oregon-born Admiral studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. While working on the Federal Arts Project in Oakland in the late 1930s, she and the poet Robert Duncan produced a single issue of the magazine Epitaph, which later became The Experimental Review. Relocating to New York, Admiral enrolled at the Hofmann School to study painting with Hans Hofmann. While at the school, she met the artist Robert DeNiro.

There is an audible gasp at the Shrine Auditorium when "American Hustle" wins best cast on Saturday night. The actors arrive giddy onstage, and in an instant they are backstage. At first it's whispers and hugs, then there is a blitz of camera flashes, and Jennifer Lawrence says she doesn't want to talk to press. "I hate myself when I talk," she says to her publicist as Bradley Cooper strides to her side. "Was this a surprise?" a reporter asks him. But when it comes time to talk he can't summon words, and it's clear that he's shocked.

Creative Artists Agency senior executive Sandy Climan was hired Thursday as an executive vice president of MCA Inc., the first high-level departure from the agency since former Chairman Michael S. Ovitz announced in August that he is leaving to join Walt Disney Co. Climan's exit had been expected in the wake of the Ovitz departure, but the destination was a surprise to Hollywood executives.

Vikki LaMotta, the Bronx, N.Y.-born beauty whose marriage to boxer Jake LaMotta was portrayed in the film "Raging Bull," has died. She was 75. LaMotta died Jan. 25 at Boca Raton Community Hospital in Florida, about six months after open-heart surgery, said her son Harrison Foster. In the movie, Robert DeNiro plays the boxer who is obsessed with his young wife, played by Cathy Moriarty, but his obsession drives her away.

Call it a case of art imitating life: Drug dealer turned superstar rap icon 50 Cent is set to portray -- what else? -- a drug dealer in the upcoming indie thriller "Righteous Kill," which co-stars Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro as detectives chasing a serial killer.

Firefighters DeNiro and Russell: Robert DeNiro and Kurt Russell are getting a crash course on firefighting and arson investigation from the Chicago Fire Department. Instructors from the department's Fire Academy are giving up to three hours of training each night to the cast of "Backdraft," a movie about a conflict between two brothers, both firefighters, and life in an urban fire department, Fire Chief Stanley Span said.

A man suspected of stealing more than $3,400 worth of goods from a Hollywood bungalow rented by Robert DeNiro and taking the actor's rented Mercedes-Benz was arrested Wednesday, police said. William Dalton, 25, was arrested shortly after Long Beach police found the Mercedes parked near Pacific Coast Highway and San Francisco Avenue, Long Beach Police Lt. Norman Ericksen said. The car was stolen Nov. 18, apparently after the second of two burglaries at the hotel bungalow rented by DeNiro.

Martin Scorsese has directed his first commercial for American television, and it was only another Italian who could get him to do it. Scorsese was given total creative control on the 30-second spot for Armani, Milanese designer Giorgio Armani's signature men's fragrance. Insiders report that the commercial is minimalist, to say the least. There's no dialogue and the setting is spare in the extreme. Armani, for his part, told Scorsese to avoid "just selling sex" and wanted an elegant tone.
