Three Burbank school board members were served with a lawsuit during a televised meeting Thursday, visibly angering board President Denise Lioy Wilcox. Wilcox grabbed the papers, containing sex and race discrimination claims filed by a former high school principal, from a courier and threw them over her shoulder. "Let me get this straight," she said. "I'm being served as an individual board member and I'm being sued as an individual board member to take away my home and my property.

The Burbank school board has reversed a decision made last month that would have expanded the number of students from Burbank High School who are allowed to attend John Burroughs High School. The board voted to rescind a move to increase the boundaries of an area whose residents may choose between the two schools. The board voted 4 to 1 to return the area to its former size--the region between Victory Boulevard and Empire Avenue.

The Burbank Board of Education is moving into the world of television, and may overhaul some of its routines to keep the ratings up. "We need to rearrange our schedule for television," board member Robert Dunivant said Thursday as the board decided to televise its meetings for the first time.

Teachers and school principals will be able to buy supplies using a Burbank school district credit card in September, rather than paying the bills themselves and waiting as long as two weeks to get reimbursed, a district official said Monday. The credit card will be more efficient and can be easily tracked to avoid abuses, district officials said. "This, hopefully, will provide some relief for teachers and administrators," said Sharon Hoaglund, fiscal services administrator for the district.

In a split vote, the Burbank school board has rejected a proposal from John Muir Middle School to let students out of class an hour early twice a month to give teachers more planning time. "I've got comments from people saying, 'You've got to be kidding,' " board President Elena Hubbell said just before the 2-2 board vote that defeated the measure last week. Hubbell and board member Joseph Hooven voted against the plan, while Denise Lioy Wilcox and Robert Dunivant supported it.

Burbank High School Principal Keiko Hentell, who was to have been demoted to English teacher with the end of her contract in July, has been removed from office effective Monday. The decision was made Thursday afternoon "for the best interests of the school district," said Supt. Arthur Pierce without further explanation. Caroline Brumm, the principal at Burbank's Edison Elementary School, has been named interim principal.

Former high school football coach Robert Dunivant scored a surprise victory Tuesday over seven other candidates for three seats on the Burbank Board of Education. Four candidates, including incumbent William Abbey, won places in a runoff election in April for the other two seats. Dunivant, a real estate agent who retired from his 25-year football coaching career at John Burroughs High School last year, received 53% of the 14,913 votes cast.

Three Burbank middle schools have begun a pilot project with a local transportation group to use federal funds to see whether education can help alleviate traffic and smog. The project surveys students, parents and teachers about their views and habits regarding using personal cars, car pooling and public transportation.
