Two of your worst nightmares may be merging in the same movie. According to New Line Cinema pres Robert Shaye, there's a possibility that Jason, the hockey-masked killer of "Friday the 13th Part VI," may do battle with Freddy Krueger, the demented/deformed star of New Line's two "Nightmare on Elm Street" pics. "We've talked," said Shaye, "but Paramount's already done five sequels with Jason. We've got to make Freddy a little tougher before he battles Jason.

Freddy Krueger's back but not for another "Nightmare on Elm Street." Robert Englund, fearsome, long-fingered Freddy of the "Nightmare" film series, makes his directing debut on CineTel's "976-EVIL," to start filming July 8. The horror yarn concerns two cousins--one bad, the other a mama's boy--raised by a crazy aunt. "It involves character reversals," England said. "An occult forecast line has been disconnected--but someone's stilling answering it."

Freddy Krueger as the Phantom of the Opera? That's pretty much the way it turns out in the latest film version of the durable Gaston Leroux tale when Robert Englund, who plays the hideous, terrifying madman in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, assumes the role of the phantom. But this new "Phantom of the Opera" (citywide)--which has no connection with either of the current stage versions--is a film at odds with itself. Both director Dwight H.

Movie publicists got away with murder Thursday. They persuaded Mayor Tom Bradley to proclaim today Freddy Krueger Day in Los Angeles in honor of the fictional serial killer who has rampaged through the gruesome "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series. The mayor wasn't on hand to personally present the actor who portrays Krueger with the ornate, signed proclamation--he was across town presiding over a sewage plant grand opening.

Like Dracula, Freddy Krueger just can't be kept down. He's back again in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" (citywide). Hideously burned but possessing supernatural powers--and a clawlike razor-tipped right hand, the erstwhile child murderer is still running amok. The big difference is that his films are becoming burlesques of the original, and that's frankly all to the good.
