Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne announced Thursday that it will shut down Dec. 31, becoming the sixth Los Angeles County emergency room this year to close its doors because of financial problems. The move will force patients to find another hospital just as the flu season hits and underscores the strain facing the county's teetering emergency medical system.

Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne has agreed to pay the government $2 million to settle a lawsuit that accused the hospital of Medicare fraud, the U.S. attorney's office announced Tuesday. The lawsuit accused the hospital of billing Medicare for more expensive treatments than those actually performed. The hospital billed Medicare for treating severe respiratory infections when, in fact, the treatments were for pneumonia, according to the suit.

Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood drastically curtailed its emergency room service Friday, turning away all patients brought by rescue ambulances, except those with obstetrical emergencies. Ambulances will be diverted to other hospitals, including Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne and Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood.

Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne has received $17,500 from Chevron USA in El Segundo through the efforts of Christopher P. Mehlum, chairman of the medical center's board of trustees and a retired Chevron executive. The hospital will use the money to upgrade patient rooms.

Construction has begun on a $34-million expansion of Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center, the hospital announced this week. The project will add 79 beds to the 255-bed facility, as well as new intensive care, obstetrics and neonatal intensive care units. Officials expect the expansion to be complete in 2004. The hospital was acquired this month by the Daughters of Charity Health System from Catholic Healthcare West.

Police arrested a Hawthorne man Saturday in connection with the stabbing death of his common-law wife. Leonard Binns, 38, was being held without bail after police found Rose Ann Thompson, 29 in their apartment at 4080 120th St. with multiple stab wounds shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne, a Sheriff's Department spokesman said. The spokesman declined to give further details.

Hawthorne-based Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center has added outpatient services here to its drug and alcohol treatment center, according to Director Larry Jacobson, who said people suffering from less acute problems will be treated without extended time off work. The program, which includes education, group therapy and family participation, will be held at Olympian Medical Group, a Kennedy industrial medical clinic at 500 N. The county Board of Supervisors has ordered an inquiry into the morgue at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne, after the discovery last month of a body forgotten there for 333 days. The decomposed remains of Armando Chapal Ramirez, 21, were left unidentified in the hospital morgue until late October. He died last year of complications from a drug overdose, officials said.

A 17-year-old Lawndale boy drowned Friday night at Dockweiler Beach when he got hit by a large wave while wading in the surf, authorities said. Lifeguards recovered Ricardo Esteves about 15 feet from shore at about 8:20 p.m. He was transported to Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy within the next few days. The boy was at the Los Angeles beach with his family, police said.
