Sam Farmer, Los Angeles Times Robert Griffin III had an excellent combine even though he didn't throw, and the Rams are the huge beneficiaries of that because their No. 2 pick is all the more valuable.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was tapped to drive the pace car for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series race in Richmond, Va., on Saturday night, thanks to prodding on Twitter by his friend Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt, this year's Daytona 500 winner and a longtime Redskins fan, tweeted a month ago that perhaps Griffin could be grand marshal at the race at Richmond International Raceway. Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier then asked Earnhardt if Griffin could drive the pace car that leads the 43-car field to the green flag.

The New Orleans Saints weren't able to pry the football from Redskins rookie Robert Griffin III, so why should anybody else? Griffin wasn't letting go of the ball after Sunday's 40-32 victory at the Superdome, according to a Washington Post report, and declined someone's offer to hold it for him while he did interviews after the game. Griffin waved off the offer. "I got it," he said. Actually, he had just about everything under control all day. Playing in a stadium where no visiting team had won since the 2010 season, RG3 became the first player in NFL history to throw for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in his debut game.

At 2-13, the Houston Texans have the inside track on the No. 1 overall pick in May's NFL draft. But if the Texans were to win at Tennessee on Sunday, and Washington were to lose at the New York Giants, the Redskins, who had a weaker schedule, would get that prime pick … … and the honor of turning it over to St. Louis as part of the Robert Griffin III deal. :: For the 11th year in a row, the league will have at least one team go from worst to first in consecutive seasons.

Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins just lost to Mark Thompson's beloved Carolina Panthers this past weekend. And boy, is the radio personality/football fan extraordinaire thrilled about that. But during the " NFL Slam With Mark and Sam" broadcast Monday, Thompson couldn't help but marvel at what he saw from the rookie quarterback, even in a loss. "This guy is so good and poised and solid," Thompson said. "I see - as long as the Redskins can find out how to put tools with him as his career continues to blossom - I see wonderful things for that kid. " Times NFL writer Sam Farmer - the "Sam" half of the Slam - was a little more cautious when looking into the future for RG3. "It'll be interesting to see if he can sort of cater his game, change his game a little bit to keep it effective in the NFL because maybe teams are starting to figure him out even this early," Farmer said before predicting that Griffin will probably explode for a huge game next week.

Robert Griffin III, the second overall pick in the NFL draft last spring, had a better debut on Sunday than No. 1 selection Andrew Luck. Statistically and in the win-loss column. Griffin guided the Washington Redskins to a 40-32 upset of the New Orleans Saints. Then again, he was playing in his parents' hometown and against a mediocre defense missing one of its suspended starters. Luck and the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Soldier Field in Chicago to take on the more defensive-oriented Bears, who yielded some points in an otherwise easy 41-21 victory.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III -- in a development that should shock nobody -- is well ahead of schedule for his recovery from knee surgery, Washington's team doctor told the NFL Network on Friday. Griffin, the league's offensive rookie of the year, underwent a reconstructive operation last month to repair the anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee. The typical recovery and rehabilitation time for a professional athlete is nine to 12 months.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who suffered a concussion on Sunday, still has to complete the league's mandated return-to-play protocol before he's cleared for practice, but his teammates and Coach Mike Shanahan were optimistic he will be able to play in this week's game against the Minnesota Vikings. “We should find out in the next few days exactly what happens,” Shanahan said. “Right now it looks good. I'm not really sure if it stays that way. The professionals will monitor his situation and let us know if he's able to play or not. We surely have nothing to do with it.” Griffin was injured while scrambling near the sidelines during the 24-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on a hard hit by linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III got a close look at one another Saturday in Landover, Md., during a much-anticipated preseason game featuring the top two selections in the NFL draft. While the outcome was far from decided when the two rookie quarterbacks exited the game early in the third quarter, Griffin's Washington Redskins pulled away for a 30-17 victory over Luck's Indianapolis Colts. Luck, the top selection, had slightly better statistics, completing 14 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a 31-yard scoring strike to rookie receiver T.Y. Hilton.

Three is a magic number. Those of us who grew up on "Schoolhouse Rock" already know that . Others have had to find out for themselves. Washington Redskins fans learned very quickly Sunday, when rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III completed his first eight passes as a pro, including an 88-yard touchdown to Pierre Garcon. Overall, RG3 completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions for a passer rating of 139.9. He also gained 42 yards rushing.

It's a strange week when Washington Coach Mike Shanahan is rolling the dice by taking out the healthy-enough Robert Griffin III, and Chicago Coach Marc Trestman is rolling the dice by putting in the healthy-enough Jay Cutler. If Cutler doesn't match or exceed what hot-handed successor Josh McCown has done, it looks like the end of the road for him in Chicago. As for Shanahan, who has shut down Griffin for the final three games of the season - citing all the punishing hits the quarterback has endured - the paved road in Washington ended some ways back.

It's official: Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins, and star Robert Griffin III - though he feels healthy enough to play - is on the shelf for the rest of the season. “Every player wants to play,” a subdued Griffin said at a news conference Wednesday. “Any quarterback wants to finish out the season with his team when you're healthy enough to do so. But it's Coach's decision, and you have to respect that authority, just like I always have.” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said earlier this week that he was considering benching Griffin so he could head into the off-season healthy, as opposed to last season, when he stayed in a playoff game against Seattle despite his hobbling and wound up suffering a devastating knee injury.

It takes quite the sales job to explain why a medically cleared Robert Griffin III won't play for the rest of the season. Embattled Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan realized that and gave it his best shot Wednesday, speaking passionately at times in a 28-minute news conference that included references to the team's "circus atmosphere" and insistences that the move isn't a ploy to get himself fired. The upshot is that Griffin will be the inactive third quarterback for the Redskins' final three games, behind starter Kirk Cousins and backup Rex Grossman.

Robert Griffin III has plenty to worry about as a second-year quarterback with the struggling Washington Redskins, including criticism regarding his father's visit to the team's locker room after another loss on Monday night. RG3 let the media know on Wednesday that all was well with his dad paying a visit after the 27-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. “Yeah, I was a little shocked that he was there, but he meant no harm,” Griffin told reporters. “And anybody out there that's going after my dad needs to back up. That is my father.

San Francisco linebacker Ahmad Brooks got a good, close look at Washington's Robert Griffin III on Monday night, delivering two of the 49ers' four sacks of the Redskins quarterback. So Brooks might know what he's talking about when he offers this assessment of the 2012 offensive rookie of the year, via Comcast SportsNet: "He's obviously a man and he makes his own decisions, but I personally don't feel he should be playing right now. " Griffin has been playing on a repaired right knee after ligament damage in playoff loss back in January.

The final pass by Robert Griffin III on Sunday didn't hit the mark, but the quarterback's critical postgame comments sure did. He pointed to his receivers' inability to get open on a game-ending interception. That angered at least one teammate, and Griffin issued a semi-apology Wednesday. “I think at the end of the day, I just have to know in that situation after a tough loss to a divisional opponent I can't give anybody any opportunity to read into my words and misinterpret anything,” he told reporters.

We knew quarterback Robert Griffin III could score, and now we know he's a great rebounder too. The Washington Redskins star, whose rookie season ended with a major knee injury, will start the Monday, Sept. 9 opener against Philadelphia, according to an ESPN report. Although Griffin did not appear in any exhibition games this summer, the Washington Post reported Monday that “several people who have been involved in Redskins' practices” said the quarterback has taken practically all the snaps with the No. 1 offense since last week and looks like the dynamic player we saw last season.
