WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero, who was in New York this week promoting his May 4 fight against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. , was arrested Thursday at John F. Kennedy International Airport when he tried to take a gun onto a plane. Police said the 30-year-old boxer from Gilroy, Calif., had a box with an unloaded .40-caliber handgun and three unloaded magazines that he tried to check with a ticket agent. Although the gun had been registered by Guerrero in California, it's illegal in New York to carry a weapon that is not licensed there.

A Whittier man was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison Friday for shooting his former friend to death after they had a falling out over money and a woman. Jose Antonio Barrios, 22, was convicted in January in the death of 27-year-old Robert Guerrero in 2013 after the two ran into each other at a Stater Bros. supermarket. Barrios got into Guerrero's truck, and they drove to a residential area of Norwalk, where he shot Guerrero three times, pushed him out and then drove off. Guerrero's truck was later found two blocks from Barrios' home.

LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather Jr. weighed in at 146 pounds for his Saturday night welterweight title defense against Robert Guerrero, who weighed the limit, 147 pounds. Mayweather (43-0, 26 knockouts) said after weighing in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, where he'll fight Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) in a Showtime pay-per-view bout, that he's confident of victory. “We had a tremendous training camp, my team did a great job getting me ready, and now it's my time to go into the squared circle and shine,” Mayweather said.

LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather Jr. came to sell his May 3 welterweight title fight at MGM Grand on Saturday, hyping the idea his opponent, Marcos Maidana, has a chance to stain Mayweather's spotless 45-0 record. “You can't take any fighter for granted, anything can happen,” Mayweather said. “… This guy is tailor-made to make a war.” If that's not enough reason to know his confidence is brimming despite Maidana's impressive 2013 knockouts of Josesito Lopez and Adrien Broner, checking in with Mayweather's close friend and assistant trainer Nate Jones seals the deal about the fast-moving defensive wizard.

Andre Berto and Robert Guerrero, two former world champions who could still use  more name recognition in their pursuit of boxing stardom, will fight each other Nov. 24 in Ontario with a likely captive Thanksgiving weekend audience tuned in. Former world welterweight champion Berto (28-1, 22 knockouts) will fight for the first time since September 2011, after he saw his June shot against Victor Ortiz scrapped because Berto tested positive for a steroid. The California State Athletic Commission later reviewed the case and cleared Berto, 29, of wrongdoing, identifying his sample as a result of contamination.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been out of the ring for more than a year but there was little rust showing in his 36-year-old body on Saturday night. Mayweather spent the first couple of rounds at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas sizing up Robert Guerrero and then the champion's stinging right proved to be more than the difference in a fight that was never in doubt, earning a unanimous decision to retain the WBC welterweight title. Mayweather's defense was so strong that Guerrero was unable to land a punch that slowed the undefeated champion.

Robert Guerrero leaned on his faith through a drawn-out wait before unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. tapped him as his next opponent, May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. “I just always believed that it was meant to be and that I'd be rewarded for what I have done,” Guerrero told The Times on Friday in a telephone conversation. Mayweather (43-0, 26 knockouts) announced this week that he would make the 29-year-old southpaw Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) his first foe in beginning a new television deal with pay-per-view provider Showtime and its parent network.

Robert Guerrero's promoter initiated conversations with Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s representatives Monday with hopes of staging a fight between the pair in the spring. "Interest is there," said Golden Boy Promotions Chief Executive Richard Schaefer. Guerrero (31-1) produced a stirring unanimous-decision victory over former world welterweight champion Andre Berto on Saturday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario. Guerrero knocked down Berto in each of the first two rounds, then pressed the action against the bigger man, withstanding heavy right-handed uppercuts, out-punching Berto and winning the final two rounds.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced Tuesday he will return to the ring for the first time in a year to fight Robert Guerrero on May 4, probably at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, as part of a new deal with Showtime and CBS for up to six fights in 30 months. Mayweather, 35, hasn't fought since May 5, 2012, when he defeated Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision. He has previously been a mainstay on HBO pay-per-view, his 2007 victory over Oscar De La Hoya standing as the most lucrative event in boxing history.

Boxing is a haven for fluid situations. Injuries, upsets and personal vendettas can change the course of an anticipated matchup. With that disclaimer, the sport's current landscape bodes well for Robert Guerrero and Andre Berto, welterweight opponents Saturday in Ontario, to position themselves for a spring date against Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Absolutely a possibility," said Oscar De La Hoya, who is promoting the HBO-televised Guerrero-Berto fight...

A “very disappointed” Amir Khan is now mulling his options after getting passed over by Floyd Mayweather Jr., who Monday chose Marcos Maidana as his May 3 opponent. Khan promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which has assisted Mayweather in the promotion of all of his fights since 2007, said Mayweather (45-0) told Schaefer at the Lakers game Sunday night that Khan lacked “a signature” victory that would convince Mayweather to fight him. “I explained to Amir that this doesn't mean he'll never get the fight,” Schaefer said.

Last month, Adrien Broner exercised a rematch clause to pursue the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Assn. welterweight belts that he lost Dec. 14 to Marcos Maidana. The move was jarring to many who watched Maidana twice knock down Broner - once through the ropes - en route to a unanimous-decision victory in San Antonio. How intently Broner (27-1, 22 knockouts) or his manager Al Haymon actually wanted that fight is a lingering question now that Haymon helped coordinate the May 3 bout between his fighters Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Maidana.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., who opened a lucrative Showtime pay-per-view deal with two fights in 2013, was announced Tuesday as the Boxing Writers' Assn. of America fighter of the year. Mayweather (45-0) dominated both of his bouts, first picking apart Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision in May before out-working the younger, more inexperienced Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September. "I have dedicated my whole career to being the best and because of that I have been on top for 17 years," Mayweather said in a statement.

Achieving the impossible has to start somewhere, and after so many failed tries to make a Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao super-fight, there's an olive branch being extended. Showtime Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza, whose premium network has four fights remaining in its exclusive deal with the unbeaten Mayweather, said he plans to reach out this week to Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum to gauge interest in the bout. Despite Arum's denials, Espinoza said he had made repeated efforts to talk to Arum on the telephone.

LAS VEGAS -- Will it set the record? Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s anticipated junior-middleweight title fight  Saturday against Mexico's Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could threaten the 2.45 million pay-per-view buys valued at $137 million generated by Mayweather's 2007 victory over Oscar De La Hoya. The man who helped negotiate Mayweather-Alvarez said though it's his tendency to think conservatively, “if there's a fight that's going to break the record, this is it.” Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza said the matching of boxing's most well-known fighter against the rising star of the sport's fan base, “has the potential to be a historic event, on one of the best pay-per-view cards in the last 10 to 15 years.

Robert Guerrero's commitment to the toughest of challenges was well regarded outside the ring in how he helped his wife, Casey, recover from cancer. Saturday night in Ontario, the Northern California boxer stuck his head into another brave battle for 12 rounds and beat Andre Berto in a gritty display that could land him his dream fight. Guerrero (31-1-1) was awarded 116-110 scores by judges Julie Lederman, Alejandro Rochin and Max DeLuca after knocking down Berto in each of the first two rounds, then pounding the body, pressing Berto to the ropes and standing up to the heavier man's best power punches to seal the triumph.

Define toughness. Punching a man in the face? Or braiding a girl's hair? Robert Guerrero chose to braid hair, and no amount of brutal acts in the boxing ring, where Guerrero earns his living, could better measure a man's toughness. Last winter, Guerrero, 27, was scheduled to leave his Gilroy home to train for his first International Boxing Federation super-featherweight title defense when Stanford Hospital doctors reinforced the gravity of his wife Casey's battle against leukemia.

The welterweight title fight between champion Timothy Bradley of Palm Springs and Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico has been shifted to Oct. 12, to avoid conflict with the Sept. 14 super-welterweight title bout between unbeatens Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Bob Arum, who's promoting Bradley-Marquez on HBO pay-per-view at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, told the Los Angeles Times on Friday that he always intended to move the bout from Sept. 14 if it turned out that Mayweather could keep the date he first made at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
