The members of the Robert Hodge fan club could have met in a closet last week. Make room for company. Hodge, the Colorado quarterback who had such a disastrous debut against USC, walked off the Rose Bowl field a winner against UCLA on Saturday. But before he could reach the tunnel, some buddies from Manhattan Beach Mira Costa High hailed him from the front row, kissing his head when he reached the stands. "We knew you could do it," they told him.

After spinning the wheel and landing on the $1 million spoke, Marilyn Hodge dedicated the win to her late husband, a big lottery fan, she said. "I don't believe it," Hodge said. "I wanted to win this for my husband's sake." The winning spin will be shown during a telecast this afternoon.

Mira Costa High seized opportunities provided by Monrovia in its second appearance in the CIF Southern Section Division IX final and defeated the Wildcats, 28-14, Saturday night before 5,000 at El Camino College. If not for Carson Palmer, Cory Paus could be trotting through the Rose Bowl tunnel for the first time Saturday. In a Colorado uniform. Paus became enamored of Colorado while at a quarterback camp there before his senior year in high school. Two days into the camp, a tall quarterback from California arrived, and caught the eye of Rick Neuheisel, then Colorado's coach. "I was the top dog, then [Palmer] came in and stole my thunder," Paus said.
