The 29th Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced Tuesday that Robert Redford will receive the American Riviera Award at a tribute Feb. 7 at the Arlington Theatre. The festival takes place Jan. 30 through Feb. 9. Redford, 77, has starred in such classic films as 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," 1973's "The Sting" and "The Way We Were" and won a best director Oscar for his debut feature as a filmmaker, 1980's "Ordinary People. " Redford also changed the landscape of independent cinema, establishing Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival.

Though Robert Redford may be the very platonic ideal of a movie star -- a matinee idol from films such as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting," "The Way We Were," "The Electric Horseman" and "Out of Africa" -- he has of late been involved with smaller-scale, socially conscious dramas. So many were surprised last week by the news that Redford would be appearing in the Marvel Studios comic-book action sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" as a senior leader in the secret government agency of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A few weeks ahead of the trifecta of fall film festivals, Sony Pictures Classics has purchased all U.S. rights to Robert Redford's new film "The Company You Keep. " Redford stars in the film that he also directed opposite Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie and Susan Sarandon. The movie centers on a former Weather Underground activist (Redford) who goes on the run from a journalist (LaBeouf) who has discovered his identity. Lem Dobbs ("Haywire") adapted the script from the 2003 novel by Neil Gordon.

PARK CITY, Utah -- Violence in entertainment isn't just a topic for Washington this week -- it's also on the mind of Sundance Film Festival organizers. Days after a White House Task Force on Gun Violence led by Vice President Joe Biden met with a group of Hollywood executives, Robert Redford, who helped found the Sundance Film Festival, admitted he himself questions the industry's emphasis on violence. "I think it's absolutely not only appropriate, but overdue, to have a dialogue" about violence on screen, the filmmaker said Thursday at a news conference kicking off the 10-day long annual event.

Update: A Malibu beach home once owned by actor-producer-director Robert Redford has sold for $11.75 million. The gated two-story, built in 1948, has walls of glass, living areas that open to patios, and stone and hardwood floors. There are five bedrooms, 4 1/2 bathrooms, two fireplaces and 5,329 square feet of living space in the seaside house along Broad Beach. Redford, 73, is directing "The Conspirator," a historical drama. He starred in " Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969)
