Robert S. Cohen, founding chair of drama at UC Irvine, has been named acting dean of the School of Fine Arts, the university announced Monday. Cohen fills in for Robert Hickok, who is taking early retirement effective July 1. A search committee will seek a permanent replacement. Cohen has written 10 books, including "Acting One," which is required reading in 113 university drama programs. He also has directed nearly 100 plays at the university and at professional theaters.

Robert Cohen has resigned as chairman of the UC Irvine department of drama after holding the post for more than 21 years. Cohen, 52, said Thursday that his successor would be elected by the drama faculty, "presumably within the next two weeks." The resignation, which he termed "absolutely amicable and something I've been planning to do for a couple of years," was announced in a letter to his faculty colleagues on Jan. 31.

Five people, including former UC Irvine Chancellor Jack Peltason and his wife, Suzanne, are to be awarded the university's highest honor, the UCI Medal, campus officials announced Monday. Three others who will receive the award are Louise Turner Arnold of Laguna Beach, a philanthropist and member of two UCI boards of directors; Martha Newkirk of Laguna Beach, a donor and former president of the UCI Alumni Assn., and faculty member Robert Cohen, founding chairman of UCI's drama department.

Robert Cohen, who resigned last week as chairman of the UC Irvine drama department, has been named co-artistic director of Theatre Forty, a 26-year-old "membership company" here. Theatre Forty consists of 219 actors who pay dues to participate. The troupe performs a range of works, from Shakespeare to contemporary original plays, in a 99-seat theater at Beverly Hills High School.

On April 30, Victor W. Whitehead was an Air Force colonel, the man in charge of the development, acquisition, management and operation of rocket launch systems for the Air Force Space division in El Segundo. Ten days later, Whitehead, 49, became vice president of operations for Martin Marietta Commercial Titan Inc. in Denver, a unit of the nation's leading rocket manufacturer--a company he'd had a hand in giving nearly $5 billion in Air Force rocket contracts during the previous two years.

DR. ARNOLD O. BECKMAN: Scientist, philanthropist and founder of Beckman Instruments in Fullerton, lives in Corona del Mar. I live on a bluff over the ocean in Corona del Mar just east of the Newport Harbor jetty. I looked down (Friday) morning and the oil hadn't gotten there yet. I'm apprehensive we may have a period here in which our shoreline will be spoiled. It is just too bad. We have to do some heavy thinking to anticipate these things.
