The day after songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman won two of the six Academy Awards that went to the 1964 Disney classic "Mary Poppins," they bounced gratefully over to Walt Disney's office, Oscars in hand. His typically restrained response was, said Robert Sherman: "The bases were loaded, we hit a home run and that's great. From now on, just try to get on base." "Walt was very feeling," Richard Sherman said, "but he didn't show his emotions.

Baby boomers and their kids can probably sing many of the tunes written by the prolific composers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. For "Mary Poppins," they penned the Academy Award-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and won another Oscar for best original score. Ventura County will celebrate Law Day on Monday to inform the public about how laws make democracy possible. This year's theme is "Speak Up for Democracy and Diversity." Employees from the district attorney's office, probation agency, public defender's office and Sheriff's Department will be available to answer questions. The day's events, open to area students, include a mock trial, shadowing a court employee and lunch with a judge. They will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

America Online said advertising chief Robert Sherman has resigned after a year with the unit, where ad sales are forecast to fall as much as 45%. The AOL Time Warner Inc. subsidiary said last week that sales of new ads rose in the first quarter and that it expected "double-digit" ad growth in 2004. Sherman, who had come out of retirement to help reverse a sales slide, leaves his job as president of interactive marketing today, a spokesman said.

An air-conditioning unit broke and flooded three courtrooms at the Ventura Hall of Justice on Wednesday, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage and forcing officials to move cases to other courtrooms. The flooding began about midnight Tuesday after a 1-inch pipe burst in the fourth-floor air-conditioning system. Water soaked carpets and damaged computer equipment as it seeped down to the ground floor of the courthouse, an official said.

One of eight convicts who staged a well-organized escape from the maximum-security Kentucky State Penitentiary was captured near the prison Friday, authorities said. "We may be closing in on some more," prison spokesman Barry Bannister said after convicted robber Robert Sherman was taken into custody about two miles from the prison.
