His father, not long before he died, handed Robert Trentham a bundle of papers that took the classically trained singer on a path through his family history and one of the country's profoundest eras. The documents came from his grandmother, Mattie, and chronicled the Trenthams who lived in Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee during the Civil War.

The Side Street Strutters, resident group at Disneyland, will open the 55th North Orange County Community Concerts Assn. series Sept. 21. The swing group will play a program of big-band music at 8 p.m. in the Fullerton First United Methodist Church, 114 Pomona Ave. The four-concert series will continue at the church Feb. 2, with flutist Debra Reuter-Pivetta and pianist Federico Pivetta; March 8 with Robert Trentham singing songs of the Civil War; and April 17 with pianist Cristiana Pegoraro.

From the great wave of opera, symphonies, recitals and dance programs this season, picking even a few must-sees is hard. Here's one pass at the list . . . Starting with opera: * Verdi adored Shakespeare, but he composed only three operas based on Shakespearean texts. The earliest was "Macbeth," which Opera Pacific stages Jan. 16-21 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Paul Fink and Gordon Hawkins alternate in the title role.
