Gary Cunningham, senior vice president and creative director at the Irvine office of national advertising firm AC&R, has jumped ship to become a partner with an Orange County shop. Cunningham plans to join Costa Mesa-based Roberts/Mealer/Emerson on Wednesday. The firm will become Roberts/Mealer/Cunningham on Jan. 1, dropping the name of James Emerson, who retired in June. AC&R was Cochrane Chase, Livingston & Co. until about a year ago, when it merged into AC&R Advertising Inc.

Roberts, Mealer Grows: Roberts, Mealer & Co., an advertising and public relations agency in Santa Ana, said this week that it has purchased a Los Angeles-based ad agency and hired four of its employees. Frojen Advertising Inc.'s business will be merged with Roberts, Mealer's, the company said, for combined annual billings of more than $10 million. The company will keep the Roberts, Mealer name and Santa Ana headquarters, with a satellite account management office in Los Angeles.

Ad Firm Wins Awards: Roberts, Mealer & Company, an advertising and public relations company in Santa Ana, won "Best of Show" and nine other awards in an annual contest sponsored by Los Angeles-based Business Communications and Marketing Assn. The 26-year-old contest, which covers 14 western states, is the biggest in the West for advertisers and marketers that create campaigns to sell products or services to other businesses, rather than to the public.

For the advertising firms of deYoung Ginsberg Weisman Bailey of Irvine and Salvati Montgomery Sakoda Inc. of Costa Mesa, Orange County's 32nd annual AdClub AdAwards on Saturday night was a repeat performance with a slight twist. Last year, not only did the two agencies take home the most honors, but dGWB also received almost twice as many awards as Salvati Montgomery. This year, dGWB was again the biggest winner with 65 honors, but Salvati Montgomery gained ground with 46 awards.
