Mention the word Omaha to college baseball players, and grandiose visions begin to swirl through their imaginations. Autograph seekers, major league scouts, nonstop media attention . . . The eastern Nebraska city, site of the College World Series, is a college baseball player's Mecca. For two weeks each spring, it is brimming with the hoopla of which players dream. Brent Mayne continued his record hitting streak Sunday, but it took an unlikely set of circumstances for him to do it. Mayne extended both his Cal State Fullerton and Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. record to 26 games. Mayne singled home Jason Rolish in the bottom of the 10th inning as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Irvine, 6-5, in a PCAA baseball game in front of 250. But it was an at-bat he was lucky to get.

Yes, Ken Whitworth says, things are going pretty well. Definitely, things are going well. The UC Irvine pitcher has started eight games this season and, with a 6-1 record, he already has won as many games as he did all last season, when he was 6-7. He has been shaving a little bit off his earned-run average every time he takes the mound, whittling it to 2.64. And the past three times he has pitched, starting with a game against No.

The name of the game is baseball, but Mike Gerakos--and a few thousand others who range from big league managers to Little League dads--figure they might as well call it pitching. Gerakos, UC Irvine baseball coach, will watch the debut of his restructured team at 2:30 today against 18th-ranked USC at Dedeaux Field. Gerakos has little trepidation about his position players, though most of them are inexperienced, but he is worried about the guys on the mound.

It doesn't take long to realize these are no ordinary baseball games. To determine just how long, find someone with a stopwatch. And at the Area Code Games, that's about as difficult as finding an empty seat at a San Diego Padre home game. At the gate to San Diego State's Smith Field, a woman hands out rosters listing the names, heights, weights, phone numbers and 60-yard dash times of the 200-plus players involved.
