Hip-hop superstar Jay-Z has been certified by the National Basketball Players Assn. to represent NBA players in contract negotiations, the rapper's Roc Nation Sports agency confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. Major League Baseball Players Assn. spokesman Greg Bouris told ESPN.com later on Thursday morning that Jay-Z is now licensed to do the same for that league's players as well. The NBPA was the first players union to grant Jay-Z his certification, although he may not be able to represent any NBA athletes until he sells his less-than-1% share of the Brooklyn Nets.

Jay-Z appears ready to dive head first into his new role as sports agent, with Yahoo! Sports reporting the rapper/businessman is looking to divest his share of ownership with the Brooklyn Nets. That move would free the cultural icon to pursue certification with the National Basketball Players Assn. as an agent. NBA rules state that no one with an ownership stake in a league team can be affiliated with a player representation company. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, owns less than 1% of the Nets but has been a high-profile figure as the team made its move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

The U.S. Olympic ski team, needing star power in Lindsey Vonn's absence, can certainly look to Ted Ligety. The 29-year-old scored a World Cup victory in the super combined in Wengen, Switzerland, on Friday, beating out Alexis Pinturault of France. Though Ligety is the reigning world champion in super combined -- and won a 2006 Olympic gold in the combined -- this result marked his first World Cup win in an event other than the giant slalom. Another American skier, Bode Miller, finished ninth.
