We just can't get our solar system right. First, the beloved Pluto is downgraded to "dwarf planet. " Now it turns out that the moon may be 200 million years younger than scientists estimated. A study in the journal Nature, based on a new analysis of a lunar rock brought back to Earth in 1972 by Apollo 16 astronauts, indicates that the moon could be a more youthful 4.36 billion years old — and that the process by which it was formed happened later than scientists thought. Or possibly this lunar rock, part of the moon's crust, isn't exactly what scientists thought it was. Maybe the crust wasn't formed by a magma ocean after all. "And that's a big deal," said Lars Borg, the lead author of the study and a geochemist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

“Rock of Ages,” the Broadway musical that's also been made into a movie starring Tom Cruise, has landed in Las Vegas as the latest in a line of productions to be formatted for the Sin City stage.  Its website says the two-hour performance celebrates the "great rock music of the '80s. " It's set along the Sunset Strip and tells the tale of two young people -- Drew (Justin Mortelliti) and Sherrie (Carrie St. Louis) -- who move to Los Angeles in 1987 to pursue their dreams.

Graham Nash digs out his wallet and displays a laminated orange piece of paper that he carries with him everywhere. "This is the ticket to Bill Haley's concert in Manchester, 1958," he says, holding the item up as if it were a sacred religious relic, "that changed my life." That's just one typical moment in "The History of Rock 'n' Roll," a 10-hour documentary series comprehensively examining the 40-year history of the cultural phenomenon. There are plenty of such moments--206, to be exact.

A triumph of genial impudence over good sense and better taste, "Rock of Ages"is the guiltiest of guilty pleasures. Blessed with unstoppable energy, an undeniably bawdy sense of fun and Tom Cruise in backless leather pants, it takes songs you may never have loved and turns them into a musical that's easy to enjoy. Those tunes, undying anthems like Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" and Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," come courtesy of the 2009 musical tribute to 1980s rock that was nominated for five Tonys and is still playing on Broadway.

Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler ventured outside of their wheelhouses in new films this weekend but found their risk-taking roundly rejected at the box office. Cruise, who struck gold six months ago with his action film "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," attempted to show off his lighter side as a booze-swilling, sex-addicted '80s musician in"Rock of Ages,"while Sandler steered away from his family audience with the raunchy R-rated comedy "That's My Boy. Both films tanked, beaten by the 3-D animated flick"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted,"which was the No. 1 film for the second consecutive weekend.

When Tom Cruise popped up in 2008's “Tropic Thunder,” barely recognizable in a fat suit as a loud-mouthed, crass Hollywood executive, many moviegoers were aghast. After all, it had been only a couple of years since the actor had pulled his infamous couch-jumping stunt on Oprah Winfrey's talk show and then, months later, called Matt Lauer “glib” during an interview on the “Today” show. Cruise's cameo in “Tropic Thunder” was the first indication that he had a sense of humor, and he soon began to regain public favor.

Big hair and big '80s rock hits are what makes the musical " Rock of Ages " so retro fun. The show is set to come to the Venetian in Las Vegas starting Dec. 18, and Cyber Monday brings this box-office sale: two-for-one tickets for future performances. The deal: The musical will be performed at the Sands Theatre at the Venetian Tuesdays through Fridays and on Sundays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The show, which has a play list of rock anthems including "We Built This City" and "Don't Stop Believin'," tells the story of the quest for musical success circa 1987.

After the coffee. Before making sure I never stumble across "Mob Wives" again. The Skinny: I had flashbacks Sunday night watching HBO's "Girls," which ended with Hannah falling asleep on the F train and waking up at Coney Island. I can't count how many times I did that but fortunately no one took my wallet while I was out cold. Monday's headlines include a look at the weekend box office, a profile of Rupert Murdoch's wife, Wendi Deng, and who might be kicking the tires of Dick Clark Productions.

"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" will be at the top of the box-office food chain for the second consecutive weekend, beating out two new star-studded arrivals. DreamWorks Animation's 3-D sequel is expected to gross at least $30 million this weekend, according to those who have seen pre-release audience surveys. That would bring the picture's worldwide total to well over $200 million after just 10 days in release. Last weekend's runner-up, "Prometheus," will probably end up in the same position again, though it could find itself in a tight race with newcomer "Rock of Ages.

"Rock of Ages,"the rags-to-riches musical about a girl who finds love and fame on the Sunset Strip, opens in theaters Friday. Spun from the stage musical that began in Hollywood in 2006 and reached Broadway in 2009 (where it's still playing), the on-screen version stars Tom Cruise as faint-worthy rock god Stacee Jaxx and Julianne Hough as fresh-off-the-bus Sherrie, as well as a star-packed supporting cast including Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti and Tony-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones as the uptight mayor's wife.

Night flatters the Sunset Strip. At sunrise, dead cockroaches line the sidewalk outside the famed Whisky a Go Go. Bus exhaust fills the air. The sound of crunching metal echoes off the buildings as deliverymen roll up the back panels of their trucks, making their morning drops. Filmmaker Adam Shankman is posing for a photographer on the corner of San Vicente and Sunset at 10 a.m., trying to give his best rock 'n' roll face, though he readily admits his edge is as sharp as a butter knife.
