Huntington Beach's Rocky Ciarelli took a sabbatical from coaching this season, but when he comes back in the spring to coach the boys' volleyball team, it will be without his wife and co-coach, Cammy. Rocky Ciarelli said the Huntington Beach Union High School District has prohibited Cammy Ciarelli from continuing to coach at the high school.

It will be a sort of homecoming for Mater Dei Coach Craig Pazanti and one of his assistants, Isaac Owens, when the Monarchs play at Huntington Beach in a Southern Section Division I-A girls' volleyball semifinal tonight. Pazanti and Owens both played for and served as assistants under Huntington Beach Coach Rocky Ciarelli. Tonight, the longtime Oiler coach, with his wife and co-coach Cammy, will try to find a way to upset his proteges. "We're David and they're Goliath," Rocky Ciarelli said.

Huntington Beach volleyball Coach Rocky Ciarelli has stepped down and one of his longtime assistants, Isaac Owens, has been named as his replacement, Ciarelli said Tuesday. Ciarelli, who has coached the program for 16 years, left for personal reasons but said he will eventually return to coaching. He will continue teaching at Huntington Beach. "For now, I'm going to take a full year off," Ciarelli said. "Then I'll take another look and re-evaluate it. But I think I'll be back."

SBE/Construction won two matches Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the United States Volleyball Assn. national championships in Wichita, Kan. The Huntington Beach team beat Armed Forces, 15-7, 15-6, and George Mason University, 15-7, 11-14, 15-3. Rocky Ciarelli had 56 assists in the two games, and Bob Ctvrtlik had 35 kills. SBE/Construction will play Norseleet in the semifinals today. The finals will be played Saturday.

St. Anthony Names Football Coach Jon Adler, 28, has been named head football coach at St. Anthony High School. A former player for Fresno State and a graduate of Cal State Northridge, Adler was offensive coordinator at Salesian High School in Los Angeles last season. He replaces Ken Sharrar, who is going to USC as a graduate assistant. Coach Rocky Ciarelli gave the Oiler girls' volleyball team a rare day off Friday. "I don't think we've ever had a day off from practice," said Huntington Beach senior setter Allison Ciarelli, the coach's niece. Rocky Ciarelli couldn't recall the last time he gave one of his teams a day off, but he knew his team definitely earned it.

Top-ranked Huntington Beach defended its position with an impressive 15-7, 7-15, 15-6, 15-5 victory over second-ranked Fountain Valley in a Sunset League girls' volleyball match Thursday at Fountain Valley High. Huntington Beach (12-0, 4-0) overcame some sloppy play in the second game, and Oiler Coach Rocky Ciarelli credited his team's intelligence for the turnaround. "We weren't thinking during the second game, but our girls are smart and they proved it tonight," Ciarelli said.

Huntington Beach glided swiftly past Santa Margarita on Saturday to advance to the regional final of the state Division II girls' volleyball tournament. The Oilers overcame a late rally to win, 15-7, 15-7, 15-13. Huntington Beach (22-2), which will host Westlake Village Westlake (17-3) Tuesday in the regional final, has lost only one game in six playoff matches this season. The game the Oilers lost was in the Southern Section Division II-AA final on Nov.
