Rob Sheffield is the kind of true-blue music nerd who'll pause his latest memoir - one with a subtitle promising a book about "the rituals of love & karaoke" - to address the important topic of Rod Stewart. Not how much he loves Rod Stewart, exactly, nor which of Stewart's songs is the most fun to sing at karaoke. (Duh: "Love Touch. ") Rather, Sheffield's chapter on the singer, called "Hot Legs," examines in great detail Stewart's merry progression from "a rambling rock & roll rogue" to "an L.A. roué trapped in [a]

As you may have heard, the Rolling Stones took over L.A.'s relatively tiny Echoplex on Saturday night for a much-buzzed warm-up gig in advance of the band's North American arena tour, which is to kick off Friday at Staples Center. But the Stones weren't the only English rock veterans returning to their club roots last week: On Thursday, Rod Stewart played an invite-only show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, previewing new tunes from his upcoming album and delivering old hits such as "Forever Young" and "Rhythm of My Heart.

Does Rod Stewart deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? A lot of the Hall of Fame judges are having trouble with that question. Though Stewart was on this year's ballot, the more than 600 executives, musicians and critics who vote in the annual competition apparently looked at the generally mediocre albums that Stewart has made over the last dozen years and threw their support behind other nominees.

Rock star Rod Stewart and gambling giant Harrah's Entertainment are headed to federal court next week in Las Vegas in a $2-million dispute over a canceled casino concert. Stewart's lawyer said Friday that he intends to call the raspy-voiced British singer and Harrah's Chairman Gary Loveman as witnesses in the civil trial scheduled to begin Tuesday. The Harrah's-owned Rio hotel-casino accuses Stewart of breach of contract, contending he has no right to keep $2 million for a canceled Dec.

Who said Rod Stewart was finished? After years of commercial disappointments, Stewart is on the comeback trail with "Lost in You," a hot Top 20 single that is reminding fans of Rod the Mod's glory days. But it's his follow-up single--a striking ballad called "Forever Young"--that might really stir up fans' memories. Only it won't remind anyone of a Stewart song.

This week the Top 10 on the U.S. album chart included three takes on "White Christmas. " It's that time of year, when classic titles such as "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra catalog return to the charts, and younger artists jump straight into the Top 10 with their bids at writing the next holiday classic. Trends come and go, but if there is one sure thing in the music business, it's this: Holiday albums sell. Rod Stewart has a hit with his "Merry Christmas, Baby," an album that's gone as high as No. 3 and has sold more than 475,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It's word association time. Say the first word that springs to mind: "holiday ----. " Did you think "season"? "Sale"? "Hangover"? How about "music?" This year, there are plenty of new holiday albums to pick from. Cee Lo Green, English pop-rocker Tracey Thorn and the left-field collective Redtenbacher Funkestra are just a few of the dozens of entertainers with albums out there made for celebrating the season. But which ones will offer yuletide cheer and which will feel like the same old thing, re-gifted?

A federal jury decided Wednesday that rock star Rod Stewart should pay a Las Vegas casino $2 million plus interest for a canceled show in December 2000. The seven-member jury found unanimously that Stewart should not have kept an advance he was paid for the New Year's weekend show at the Rio Hotel Casino, which he said he was unable to perform due to throat surgery several months earlier. Stewart, 60, was not in U.S. District Court when the verdict was reached.
