Re "Rodeo country Little League," Column One, July 17 Where are social workers when you need them? I don't see why a 5-year-old should be forced to ride a sheep. And the picture of the little boy crying, the picture of him falling and the sheep jumping over his little body -- who would do this? Elizabeth Castro Santa Clarita I guess we are here in Tinseltown and all, but for someone who grew up in Mesquite, Texas, what was in your article wasn't news or at all surprising.

There's a new men's club in town that's all about shoe shopping and a stiff drink. The J.P. Club opened at the end of February on the third floor of Tod's Beverly Hills boutique. It's the second such club for the brand, which opened the first in its Milan flagship in June 2013. Boasting a one-on-one personal shopping experience, the by-appointment J.P. Club chummily showcases the new, upscale J.P. Tod's Sartorial Collection (from $1,700) in leather trunks, while inviting guests to relax in a gentleman's-club atmosphere that includes an outside terrace.

Expect a kinder, gentler Missouri State Fair from here on out. This week, the Missouri State Fair Commission ordered that officials and contractors hired by the state's rodeo association -- which would include cowboys and clowns -- complete sensitivity training before they are allowed to perform at the state fair again. What could prompt such a thing? The jeers of a clown. In a provocative bit of satire that went viral, a rodeo clown in Sedalia put a broomstick up his pants, donned a Barack Obama mask and asked the crowd whether it wanted to see a bull run over the president.

In the once-grand foyer of a dark mansion, with rain whipping at the windows, Tobey Maguire raises a glass of Champagne and offers a toast to Catherine the Great. Although it sounds like a scene straight out of "The Great Gatsby," it wasn't West Egg but Beverly Hills. And Maguire was among the guests gathered in an electricity-challenged (thanks to the storm) Greystone Mansion on Friday night to honor the addition of "Gatsby" costume and production designer Catherine Martin -- a two-time (and soon to be four-time)

So the rodeo controversy continues ("Animal Lovers Staying on Rodeo's Back," April 28)! Fifty-some years ago, as a schoolgirl, I wrote an essay defending rodeo and outlining the rules and care of the animals. The difference between then and now is that the protesters are better organized, more vocal, and definitely better funded. I'm sure since then, the rules have become even more stringent. There was mention in the article of the stock contractors' investment in the animals. That may be part of the reason they take good care of their animals, but those of us who love rodeo and the cowboy traditions, love those animals.

ANGOLA, La. - In the middle of the rodeo arena, the four men could smell manure from the animal pens and cracklins and caramel corn from the stands as they steadied themselves in their plastic lawn chairs, spread their hands on the red card table in front of them and planted their feet in the mud. They were bracing for the bull. Once it was turned loose, the last one sitting in this game called Convict Poker would win. They looked almost identical in their black helmets, protective vests and striped uniforms.

In response to Simi Valley resident Gayle Amaral's Sept. 24 letter condemning the rodeo at Simi Valley Days, it should be noted that this event enjoys a superior standard and reputation. If Ms. Amaral will open her eyes and look at the animal athletes, she will see a business that promotes their well-being. The cost is great both in purchase and maintenance, and to suggest that they are routinely mistreated or subject to violence indicates ignorance. My two teen-agers rodeo. They both spend time caring for and exercising their horses, and they are interested in the care of animals as careers.

WASHINGTON -- A clown banned from the Missouri State Fair for his involvement in a skit that mocked President Obama said that he has received death threats and complained that "a lot of people have lost their ability to laugh. " "I've had one lady spit in my face," Tuffy Gessling told Kansas City's KCTV . "Look at the country as a whole. There's a lot more to be mad at than a rodeo clown at a rodeo trying to make somebody laugh," he said.  Although it was another clown who wore the Obama mask during a bull-riding contest as the crowd was asked whether they wanted to see Obama "run down by a bull," Gessling has told media outlets that the skit was his idea.

The use of lottery funds by Victory Boulevard Elementary School in North Hollywood for a trip that included a Mexican rodeo can serve as a lesson for all educators whose thinking is muddled by the promoters of this barbaric business. Rodeo does not deserve perpetuation of its "heritage." It rightly deserves to be ended, like all such deceptive cruelty. All humane groups are against rodeo, for many reasons. One is that it teaches our children that it is admirable, sport, fun and profitable to treat captive animals cruelly.

I object to your Sept. 18 article on the Simi Valley Days rodeo. Why weren't the 17 protesters interviewed in more depth as to what motivated them to stand out in the hot sun for hours holding signs proclaiming that rodeo is cruel to animals? Public consciousness needs to be raised about what goes on at these barbaric animal abuse spectacles. Has our society deteriorated to a level that inflicting violence on docile farm animals is promoted as "family entertainment"? Boycotting rodeo is one way I've chosen to try to combat this disturbing trend.

Gucci, the famous upmarket Italian fashion house, is the sole tenant of the three-story building in the heart of the famed shopping district in Beverly Hills. You don't have to be an animal rights activist to be outraged at the abuse suffered by animals at the hands of rodeo cowboys. ("A Range of Emotions," May 18.) The photos depicting them manhandling animals should be appalling to any human being. Unfortunately, these pictures don't begin to describe the horrors that await these unsuspecting creatures, as they are poked, shocked, beaten, spurred and strangled by cowboys for the fun of it. These sadists try to justify their cruelty with the dubious claim that they get hurt more often than the animals.

Six aggressive rodeo bulls were shot to death after they escaped from an overturned cattle truck east of Hanford and, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Jim Gregg, "charged anything that moved." He said the bulls were hunted down in the dark and destroyed on the advice of their owner, Frank Pires of Strathmore, who told officers, "Don't try to take them alive, because somebody is going to get hurt." One of the bulls chased a CHP officer onto the hood of his patrol car and others charged at cars of motorists who happened into the area around California 198. The bulls, valued at $1,500 to $2,000 each, were being driven home from the Riverdale rodeo grounds.

The Tory Burch universe just keeps getting bigger. On Tuesday, the New York-based designer staked her claim on the West Coast's most famous shopping street, opening her first Rodeo Drive flagship. It's her fourth store in the Los Angeles area and her 13th in California. And yet there's something about Rodeo. "It's so iconic to L.A.," Burch said. The three-story, 4,700-square-foot space at 366 N. Rodeo Drive was designed by Burch and architect Daniel Romualdez, who designs all of the designer's stores and homes.

More than $100,000 in merchandise was stolen during a "window smash" burglary at a posh Rodeo Drive store, Beverly Hills police said Monday afternoon. Officers responded early Monday to a burglary alarm call at Saint Laurent Paris at 469 N. Rodeo Drive and found the front door shattered and the store burglarized. Several robbers fled with numerous handbags, clothing and shoes, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department. Detectives reviewed surveillance footage showing that multiple robbers had entered the store, police officials said in a statement.
