For many native Angelenos like Gail Samuel, summertime concerts at the Hollywood Bowl are a Southern California ritual as eagerly anticipated as the opening-day bite of a Dodger Dog. This year Samuel will be taking her lifelong Bowl-going habit to a new level in her recently appointed role as chief operating officer of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which spends its summers at the Bowl. Her programming prescription for the venue, Samuel said, will hew closely to the Bowl's decades-old philosophy.

MOVIES "A Fool There Was" Before there was Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie or Marilyn Monroe, there was the original film vamp, Theda Bara. The silent film actress embodied carnal desire — but few of her films survive today. Cinefamily, as part of its Silent Sirens series, will screen "A Fool There Was," a 1915 film from Frank Powell that finds Bara merely casting her sights on various men, leading them down a woeful path of spiritual degradation. Cinefamily , 611 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles.

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero came to this beach resort seeking a fresh start after realizing that their Mexico City metal band was a dismal failure. More than a decade later, Ixtapa is again a haven for them - this time from the rigors of soaring success. The couple, known as Rodrigo y Gabriela, have lived a story that could have sprouted in Hollywood: The pair swap electric guitars for acoustic ones, move to Ireland to play street corners and develop a distinctive style.

RODRIGO Sanchez, half of the Mexican guitar act of Rodrigo y Gabriela, occasionally sipped from a bottle of beer during a crowd-pleasing, cliche-riddled performance Tuesday at the Ford Amphitheatre. Just when you thought the act had run out of gimmicks, Rodrigo used the bottle to play a sort of woozy slide guitar on their instrumental version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Amazingly, the guitar did sound drunk. The capacity crowd cheered the cheap stunt, as Rodrigo knew it would.
