The head of a controversial undercover drug probe at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has been stripped of his post, it was reported Thursday. Robert Godwin was in charge of lab security during "Operation Snowstorm," an undercover internal investigation that came under heavy criticism from a congressional committee earlier this year.

A list of five finalists to become director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the nation's two major nuclear weapons research facilities, has been submitted to University of California President David Gardner. The new director will replace Roger Batzel, 66, who is retiring after holding the post since 1971, nearly half the time that the facility has existed. An announcement of the choice could be made as early as March.

A scientist who alleged that physicist Edward Teller conveyed exaggerated forecasts about "Star Wars" technology to policy makers in Washington has been summoned to the capital to discuss his allegations with congressional leaders, Rep. George E. Brown Jr. (D-Colton) said Wednesday. Brown invited Roy D. Woodruff, former associate director of defense systems at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, to Washington after publication of Woodruff's charges on the Strategic Defense Initiative.

The director of weapons research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has resigned his administrative post to devote full time to research, the lab has announced. Roy D. Woodruff has for the last five years served as associate director for defense systems at the lab, which is at the forefront of research on the Strategic Defense Initiative, sometimes called "Star Wars."

University of California President David P. Gardner has selected physicist John Nuckolls, an advocate of President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, to head the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the nation's two nuclear weapons design centers, sources close to the selection process said Tuesday. Nuckolls heads the laboratory's physics department, which oversaw development of some of the major concepts behind the controversial SDI program, informally known as "Star Wars."

Facing a projected enrollment boom for the next 20 years, the University of California probably has to build a 10th campus, or even an 11th or 12th, UC officials said Thursday. "We are beginning to plan how to plan for another campus," William Baker, UC vice president in charge of budget and university relations, said at a meeting of the Board of Regents.
