Santa Margarita High School boys' basketball Coach Roger Holmes said Thursday he has resigned his position to pursue a teaching credential. Holmes, 32, led Santa Margarita to a 35-19 record the past two seasons as a walk-on coach. "I have a 9-month-old baby and would ideally like to be coaching and teaching at a public school," Holmes said. "At this point in my life, I need to be at a public school."

Every decent human being in the Huntington Beach High School district should be outraged at the ludicrous action taken against Jim Harris, Ocean View High School basketball coach. If the school board represents the well being of the students and is in quest of excellence in our high schools, they will intervene and correct this grave injustice. Jim is guilty of being totally devoted to young people. He likes basketball, but he loves the kids. They become family to him. He is the ideal role model that every parent wants his child to have.

Marina Coach Roger Holmes says his team has a basic rule when it comes to shot selection: If you're open, shoot it. The Vikings found enough ways to get open at the right times Friday night to beat No. 5 Los Alamitos, 77-66, in a Sunset League boys' basketball game at Marina High. Dustin Kaatz led the sixth-ranked Vikings (19-2, 5-0) with 28 points. He made 19 of 20 free throws.
