Quartz Hill High right-hander Roger Worley, the top area high school player selected in the major league amateur draft earlier this month, said Tuesday he will sign this week with the Baltimore Orioles. Also, Crescenta Valley infielder Kirk Hagge has signed with the Detroit Tigers and Brigham Young right-hander Kevin Foderaro, a former Hart High and College of the Canyons pitcher, has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Worley, a third-round pick, said he will sign a contract Thursday.

The members of the Quartz Hill High baseball team are going to be "sick" today. Rather than going to class, they will be at Roger Worley's house, eating doughnuts, drinking milk and waiting for the phone call that will make their teammate the richest kid in school. Then they'll have lunch.

The annual major league amateur draft begins today. The 28 teams will, via conference call, select players for about 15 rounds today and about 30 rounds each on Friday and Saturday.

Better late than never. El Camino Real High left-hander Randy Wolf expected to be selected Thursday, the first day of the major league amateur draft. He finally got the call Friday, when the Dodgers made him a 25th-round selection. "I am a little disappointed," Wolf said, "but there's nothing I can do about it."

Jacob Cruz, an All-American outfielder from Arizona State and Channel Islands High, was the first area player selected Thursday in the major league baseball amateur draft. Cruz, a junior, was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 32nd pick in the draft, which fell in the supplemental portion of the first round. Teams are given supplemental first-round picks as compensation when they lose free agents to other clubs.

Jacob Cruz, the first area player selected in the baseball draft last month, signed Tuesday night with the San Francisco Giants for a bonus of $300,000, he said. Cruz, a supplemental first-round pick out of Arizona State, said it was a not a hard decision to forgo his senior year with the Sun Devils to play professional baseball. "(Playing professional baseball) is basically what I went to Arizona State to do," said Cruz, a graduate of Channel Islands High. "It's a steppingstone.

For Roger Worley, the second annual Christmas dinner put on by several charity groups at Mater Dei High School on Sunday afternoon marked a welcome respite from some of the harder realities of the streets. After all, it was only a few nights ago that Worley found himself dangling off the ground as a garbage truck began to pick up the dumpster in which he was sleeping.
